Northwestern 2004-05 Opera Season Opens Weekend of Nov. 12-13
EVANSTON, Ill. --- The Northwestern University School of Music 2004-05 opera season opens with two fully staged one-act operas.
Carl Orff’s “The Wise Woman” (“Die Kluge”) and Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Riders to the Sea” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12, and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, at Lutkin Hall, 700 University Place, on the Evanston campus.
“The Wise Woman,” based on a Brothers Grimm fairytale, tells the story of a farmer’s clever daughter who saves her father and a donkey driver from the wrath of the King.
Based on the John Millington Synge play, “Riders to the Sea” is a dark portrayal of an Irish mother’s concern for her sixth and only surviving son’s voyage to mainland Ireland.
Both operas will be performed in English. Michael LaTour and Noel Koran will direct the performances. Frederick Ockwell is the music director.
Single tickets are $12 for the general public; $8.50 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $5.50 for students.
