November 2004 Music Calendar

Northwestern University’s 2004-05 music season continues with two fully staged one-act operas — Carl Orff’s “Die Kluge” (“The Wise Woman”) and Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Riders to the Sea” (Nov. 12 and 13). 

Other November highlights include performances by the United States Air Force Brass Quintet (Nov. 10), Mbira Masters of Zimbabwe (Nov. 10), the Cuban ensemble Tiempo Libre (Nov. 13), and the United States Air Force Falconaires Jazz Band (Nov. 15).

Events listed below will be held on Northwestern’s Evanston campus at Pick-Staiger Concert Hall, 50 Arts Circle Dr.; Lutkin Hall, 700 University Place; Regenstein Recital Hall, 60 Arts Circle Dr.; or Garrett Seminary Chapel, 2121 Sheridan Rd., as noted below.

Sylvia Wang and Elizabeth Buccheri, duo-pianists, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, Lutkin Hall. Wang and Buccheri will perform Igor Stravinsky’s Sonata for Two Pianos and Johannes Brahms’ Sonata in F Minor for Two Pianos. Single tickets are $8.50 for the general public; $7 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $4 for full-time students.

Symphonic Band, “American Icons,” 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. The band will perform Carolyn Bremer’s “Early Light,” Ian Krouse’s “American Interlude,” Jere Hutchinson’s “Caricatures,” William Schuman’s “George Washington Bridge” and Michael Daugherty’s “Niagara Falls.” Ryan Nelson will conduct. Single tickets are $6.50 for the general public; $4.50 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $3.50 for full-time students.

Northwestern University Voices, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. University Chorale, University Singers, University Chorus, Alice Millar Chapel Choir and Women’s Chorus will perform together during this annual choral spectacular. Single tickets are $12 for the general public; $8.50 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $5.50 for full-time students.

Percussion Ensemble, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Michael Burritt will direct the Percussion Ensemble during a performance of David Skidmore’s “Echoes,” a work that won a prize in this year’s Percussive Arts Society composition contest and a new piece by Burritt, “To the Nines,” featuring senior percussionist Jacob Nissly. Other works include Charles Griffin’s “The Persistence of Past Chemistries” and David Lang’s “The So-Called Forces of Nature.” Single tickets are $6.50 for the general public; $4.50 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $3.50 for full-time students.

Evening of Brass with the United States Air Force Brass Quintet, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. The United States Air Force (USAF) Brass Quintet will join Northwestern University’s Brass Ensemble for a night of brass favorites. The USAF ensembles have performed for more than 100 million people around the world during their six decades of history. Admission is free, but reservations are required. Seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis. For reservations for up to four, call (847) 467-4000.

Mbira Masters of Zimbabwe, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, Regenstein Recital Hall. Mbira master and teacher Cosmas Magaya and Zimbabwe’s first female professional mbira player, Beauler Dyoko, will join faculty member Paul Berliner for a night reflecting traditions of the Shona people. Berliner is the author of the book “The Soul of the Mbira.” Single tickets are $8.50 for the general public; $7 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $4 for full-time students.   

Symphonic Wind Ensemble, 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Mallory Thompson will direct the Symphonic Wind Ensemble during a program that will include Antonín Dvorák’s Serenade in D Minor, Joseph Schwantner’s “… and the mountains rising nowhere,” and the Illinois premiere of Frank Ticheli’s Symphony No. 2. Single tickets are $6.50 for the general public; $4.50 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $3.50 for full-time students.

“Die Kluge” (“The Wise Woman”) and “Riders to the Sea,” 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12 and Saturday, Nov. 13, Lutkin Hall. The 2004-05 opera season opens with two fully staged one-acts in English. Carl Orff’s “Die Kluge” (“The Wise Woman”) is based on a Grimm Brothers fairy tale about a farmer’s wise daughter who saves her father and a donkey driver from the wrath of the king. Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Riders to the Sea” is about an Irish mother’s concern for her sixth and only surviving son as he sets sail in bad weather. Single tickets are $12 for the general public; $8.50 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $5.50 for full-time students.

Kids Fare, “Bienvenidos a Latin America,” 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Youngsters aged 3 to 8 and their families and friends will be able to sway, clap and snap their fingers to the vibrant Afro-Cuban beat created by the Cuban group Tiempo Libre. Single tickets are $5 for the general public; $4 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $3 for full-time students.

Tiempo Libre, 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Led by singer Joaquin “El Kid de la Salsa” Diaz, Tiempo Libre will perform a mix of Latin jazz and traditional Cuban and Afro-Cuban music. The seven-member group has toured the world and appeared with Latin stars Arturo Sandoval, Celia Cruz and Ruby Perez. Single tickets are $14 for the general public and $9 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty, staff and full-time students.

Newberry Consort, “There and Back Again — Transalpine Musical Chairs,” 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 14, Garrett Seminary Chapel. Explore the birth of the virtuosic vocal world of bel canto, largely credited to 18th century musicians Johann Adolph Hasse and Niccolo Jormelli. Soprano Christine Brandes, harpsichordist Barbara Weiss and viola de gamba player Mary Springfels will perform. Single tickets are $21 for the general public; $19 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $11 for full-time students.

United States Air Force Falconaires Jazz Band, 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 15, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Featuring some of the most sought-after jazz musicians in America, the Falconaires bring the best of the past and present by performing traditional and contemporary big band jazz. Admission is free, but reservations are required. Seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis. For reservations for up to four, call (847) 467-4000.

Regina Resnik Opera Master Class, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16, Lutkin Hall. Resnik has enjoyed global success since her professional debut in 1942 and her Metropolitan Opera debut two years later, first as a soprano and then as a self-trained mezzo-soprano. For the past three decades she has also been active as an opera director. Resnik will share her artistry with opera students. Tickets are $6.50 for the general public; $4.50 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $3.50 for full-time students.

Contemporary Music Ensemble, 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 18, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Victor Yampolsky will conduct the ensemble’s performance of George Rochberg’s “Nonet” and György Ligeti’s Piano Concerto featuring pianist Winston Choi. The concert will include the world premiere of John Austin’s “Journeys” and Guillamme Connesson’s “Double Quatour.” Single tickets are $6.50 for the general public; $4.50 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $3.50 for full-time students.

Student Composer Showcase, 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19, Lutkin Hall. Student performers and guest artists perform chamber works by undergraduate and graduate student composers. Single tickets are $6.50 for the general public; $4.50 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $3.50 for full-time students.

Jazz Nite II, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. An evening of jazz coordinated by Joel Spencer and directed by Daniel J. Farris. Single tickets are $6.50 for the general public; $4.50 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $3.50 for full-time students.

Band-O-Rama, 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 21, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Daniel J. Farris will conduct the Wildcat Marching Band in this traditional concert of band standards. Single tickets are $6.50 for the general public; $4.50 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $3.50 for full-time students.

Women’s Chorus, 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 21, Lutkin Hall. Martha Swisher will conduct the Women’s Chorus. Single tickets are $6.50 for the general public; $4.50 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $3.50 for full-time students.

Philharmonia, 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 21, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. The orchestra will perform Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, Bedrich Smetana’s “The Moldau” from “Má Vlast” (“My Fatherland”), and Verdi’s “Nabucco” overture in their first concert of the year. Robert G. Hasty and Ruth Lin will conduct. Single tickets are $6.50 for the general public; $4.50 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $3.50 for full-time students.

Matti Raekallio, piano, 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 21, Lutkin Hall. The Finnish piano virtuoso and renowned teacher at Helsinki’s Sibelius Academy will perform a solo recital. Single tickets are $8.50 for the general public; $7 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $4 for full-time students.

Northwestern University Symphony Orchestra, “German Musical Art,” 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Victor Yampolsky will conduct the ensemble in a performance of Mozart’s “Die Zauberflöte” (“The Magical Flute”) overture, Hindemith’s “Mathis der Maler Symphony” and Strauss’ “Symphonia domestica.” Single tickets are $8.50 for the general public; $7 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $4 for full-time students.
