Summer 2004 Music Calendar
Northwestern University’s summer music highlights include the Tony Award-winning musical “Falsettos” and world premiere of the new musical revue “Even Stephen” featuring the music of Stephen Flaherty and Stephen Schwartz.
Also in July is the National High School Music Institute (NHSMI) which offers students interested in music careers the opportunity to work with Northwestern University School of Music faculty. These outstanding young musicians perform as soloists and in large and small ensembles.
Events listed below will be held on Northwestern’s Evanston campus at Pick-Staiger Concert Hall, 50 Arts Circle Drive; Regenstein Hall, 60 Arts Circle Drive; Lutkin Hall, 700 University Place; or Ethel M. Barber Theatre, 30 Arts Circle Drive, as noted below.

Rex Martin, tuba, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 23, Regenstein Recital Hall. This faculty recital features Paul Hindemith’s “Sonate für Basstuba und Klavier,” J.S. Bach’s Sonata in E flat Major for flute and klavier, Sergei Prokofiev’s “Five Songs without Words,” Sofia Gubaidulina’s “Lamento” and Franz Schubert’s “Du Bist die Ruh.” Yoko Yamada-Selvaggio will be the piano soloist. Admission is free.
Orchestral Conducting Workshop for Children/Youth Chorus Directors, Thursday, June 24 to Sunday, June 27, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Summer Band, 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 30, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Ryan Nelson will conduct the band in a selection of American band classics plus two new works -- Jack Stamp’s “Pastime: A Salute to Baseball” and Eric Whitacre’s “Noisy Wheels of Joy.” Single tickets are $4 for the general public; and $2 for senior citizens, Northwestern faculty and staff and full-time students.
NHSMI Faculty Musicale, 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 1, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Admission is free.
NHSMI Ravinia Steans Institute Chamber Concert, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 6, Lutkin Hall. Each summer the Ravinia Festival’s Steans Institute invites young artists from around the world to study with its faculty. In cooperation with Northwestern’s National High School Music Institute (NHSMI), the Steans Institute brings several of these rising stars to perform on the Northwestern Evanston campus. Admission is free.

“Falsettos,” 8 p.m. Friday, July 9; 8 p.m. Saturday, July 10; 2 p.m. Sunday, July 11; 8 p.m. Thursday, July 15; 8 p.m. Friday, July 16; 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday, July 17; 2 p.m. Sunday, July 18; 8 p.m. Thursday, July 22; 8 p.m. Friday, July 23; 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday, July 24; and 2 p.m. Sunday, July 25, Ethel M. Barber Theatre. This Tony Award-winning musical by William Finn and James Lapine follows the exploits of “sexually confused” Marvin, who decides to leave his wife and son and begin a new life with his friend Wizzer. Marvin complicates matters when he wants everyone to be one big happy family. NHSMI Choir, Orchestra and Wind Ensemble, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 10, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Showcasing this season’s high school talent, each ensemble will perform a variety of well-known works. The choir will sing choral classics. The orchestra highlight will be Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8 in F Major. The wind ensemble program includes Eric Whitacre’s “Sleep” and Percy Grainger’s “Lincolnshire Posy.” Don Owens, Phil Peters and Rollo Dilworth will conduct. Admission is free.

Summer Orchestra, “Russian Summer,” 7:30 p.m. Sunday, July 11, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. The orchestra will perform Peter Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 in E Minor and Sergei Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 2 in G Minor featuring violinist Minghuan Xu and conductor Robert G. Hasty. Single tickets are $6 for the general public; $4 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $3 for full-time students.
Summer Band and NHSMI Wind Ensemble, 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 14, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Don Owens will conduct a program that includes Eric Whitacre’s “Sleep,” Owens’ “Three Movements for Symphonic Band,” Alfred Reed’s “Alleluia! Laudamus Te,” and Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Rhosymedre.” Single tickets are $4 for the general public; and $2 for senior citizens, Northwestern faculty and staff and full-time students.

Summer Jazz Ensemble and NHSMI Jazz Combos, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 17, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. This performance highlights tenor saxophonist Matt Olson, bassist Hans Sturm, pianists Michael Kocour and Joan Hickey, and percussionist Joel Spencer. Sammy Nestico’s “Basie-Straight Ahead,” Miles Davis’ “So What” and Don Owens’ “C. G. for Four Friends” are among the pieces the ensemble will perform. Tickets are $6 for the general public; $4 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $3 for full-time students.

Michael Burritt, marimba, 7 p.m. Monday, July 19, Regenstein Recital Hall. School of Music faculty member Michael Burritt performs with members of the Northwestern University Percussion Ensemble. This faculty recital includes selections from Burritt’s new compact disc “Waking Dreams” as well as works by Bach, Cage and Klatzow. Admission is free.
NHSMI String Faculty Recital, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 20, Lutkin Hall. Pianist Kuang-Hao Huang, violinists Hal Grossman and Blair Milton, violist Li-Kuo Chang and cellist Brant Taylor perform Johannes Brahms’ Piano Quintet in F Minor and other chamber works. Admission is free.
Anders Astrand, vibraphone, and Michael Kocour, piano, 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, Regenstein Recital Hall. Two of the world’s foremost jazz virtuosos, Anders Astrand and School of Music faculty member Michael Kocour, take the art of improvisation to new heights. Admission is free.
NHSMI Wind Ensemble and Honors Chamber Ensembles, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 24, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Program highlights include Dmitri Shostakovich’s “Festive Overture” and School of Music faculty member Don Owens’ “Three Movements for Symphonic Band.” Owens and Phil Peters will conduct. Johannes Brahms’ “Blessed Are They,” Leonard Bernstein’s “Danzon” from “Fancy Free” and Bob Margolis’ “Fanfare, Ode and Festival,” Edwin Goldman’s “Cheerio March,” and Harold Walters’ “Instant Concert,” highlight this concert. NHSMI Gala Finale, 2 p.m. Friday, July 30, Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Students will perform an array of musical styles and combinations during the NHSMI’s finale performance. Northwestern faculty member Don Owens conducts the wind ensemble on his own “Variations on NU Songs” and Fisher Tull’s “Sketches on a Tudor Psalm.” The orchestra will perform selections from Mozart’s Symphony No. 41 in C (“Jupiter”) and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5. The program also features choral favorites and solo selections.
(World Premiere) “Even Stephen,” 8 p.m. Friday, July 30; 8 p.m. Saturday, July 31; 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 1; 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 6; 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7; 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 8; 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 12; 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 13; 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14; and 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 15, Ethel M. Barber Theatre. The second summer performance is a world premiere musical revue featuring the music of Stephen Flaherty and Stephen Schwartz. Dominic Missimi, of last summer’s “Pop-Sical!,” will direct the performance. The musicals of Stephen Flaherty include “Once On This Island,” “Ragtime” and Northwestern’s own “A Long Gay Book.” Stephen Schwartz’s musicals include “Pippin,” “Godspell” and “Wicked.” Single tickets are $25 for the general public; $22 for Northwestern faculty and staff and senior citizens; and $12 for full-time students. Eighth International Conference on Music Perception and Cognition, Tuesday, Aug. 3 through Saturday, Aug. 7. This conference brings together researchers and musicians from around the world for a better understanding of the musical experience. It is hosted by the Society of Music Perception and Cognition.
