MAINSTAGE THEATRE

The eight-show Northwestern University 2003-04 Mainstage season is generously supported by the Sara Lee Foundation.

“The Real Thing,” 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31; 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1; 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2; 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6; 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7; 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8; and 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 9, Ethel M. Barber Theatre, 30 Arts Circle Drive, Evanston campus. The 2003-04 Mainstage season begins with Tom Stoppard’s “The Real Thing,” winner of the 1984 Tony Award for Best Play and the 2000 Tony Award for Best Revival. Stoppard’s engaging backstage comedy is about an articulate and romantically idealistic playwright whose second wife is trying to merge worthy causes with her art as an actress. Tickets are $17 for the general public; $15 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $9 for full-time students.

“Footloose,” 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14; 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15; 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16; 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20; 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21; 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22; and 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, Cahn Auditorium, 600 Emerson St., Evanston campus. “Footloose” is one of the most explosive movie musicals in recent memory to burst onto the live stage. The North Shore premiere at Northwestern University’s Cahn Auditorium will be directed and choreographed by Northwestern theatre faculty member Lara Teeter, artistic director of Light Opera Works in Evanston. This musical rocks to the rhythm of its Oscar and Tony-nominated top 40 score (augmented with dynamic new songs), while telling the story of a town’s ban on dancing and a spirited teen determined to dance anyway. Based on the book by Dean Pitchford and featuring the music of Tom Snow, Eric Carmen, Kenny Loggins and Sammy Hagar, “Footloose” celebrates the exuberance of youth and triumph of the human spirit. Single ticket prices are $24 for the general public; $20 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $11 for full-time students.
