Hedwig Dances to Perform

EVANSTON, ILL --- Hedwig Dances will present the company’s “Hedwig Reloaded” concert of contemporary dance at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7 and Saturday, Nov. 8, at the Marjorie Ward Marshall Dance Center, 10 Arts Circle Drive, on Northwestern University’s Evanston campus.

The event is sponsored by the University’s Dance Program.

Dances that will be performed during the two scheduled concerts will explore seminal life markers -- youth, maturity, work and love. They will be presented by Jan Bartoszek, artistic director of Hedwig Dances; Mei-Kuang Chen, Chicago Dance Award winner and artistic associate; dancer/choreographer Victor Alexander; and guest choreographers Renée Wadleigh and Jin-Wen Yu.

The program will showcase “What Lies Beneath,” a work choreographed by Bartoszek, that represents a woman’s spiritual journey. It is set to a sound collage by Kevin O’Donnell.

An excerpt from Bartoszek’s “Ache of the Arc,” set to music by Sequentia, is about two people who may never see each other again. Bartoszek’s dance duet “After the Fall Desire” is based on the story of Adam and Eve, and is a richly expressionistic dance set to music by Winston Damon.

“Nunca Tarde” (“Never Late”), choreographed by Alexander, is a reflection on the path of a single life, set to the song “Moroccan Night” by Michael Skening.

“Totem,” a dance quartet choreographed by Wadleigh and set to a sound score of didgeridoo music (an end-blown straight natural trumpet used by the indigenous peoples of Australia), is a ritualistic dance expressing awe, laced with family-related symbolism.

“Duet #1,” choreographed by Yu, is set to music by Bobby McFerrin.

Tickets will be sold at the door on the nights of the concert. Bleacher-style seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Tickets are $20 for the general public; and $15 for senior citizens and Northwestern faculty, staff and students.
