Paradigms and Strategies of Leadership
(Gen_Cmn 204)
How does a leader follow his moral compass in the midst of a crisis where millions of dollars and
millions of lives are at stake? Last Fall, Harry Kraemer, former CEO of Baxter Healthcare, told us how he did it.
How does a leader revolutionize the way we view those with developmental disabilities, even as those
around her tell her to “just give up”? Last Fall, Sister Rosemary Connelly, Executive Director of Misericordia, told us how she did it.
How does a leader mobilize the resources of an entire city to put it on the verge of a successful bid to host
the Olympic Games? Last Fall, Pat Ryan, Chairman and CEO of Chicago 2016, told us how he is doing it.
How does a coach instill a leadership philosophy into her players – one that teaches them how to be their best on and off the field? Last Fall, Kate Drohan, Northwestern University’s Softball Coach, told us how she is doing it.
Needless to say, if you weren’t with us in Fall ’08, you missed a lot. Fortunately, we will be doing it again
this Fall (’09) in Paradigms & Strategies of Leadership.
Leadership can be glamorous, but it can also be lonely. Leadership can be exhilarating, but it can also be
exhausting. Leadership can be rewarding, but it can also be costly and thankless. This course introduces
you to the requirements for effective leadership, including:
• How to ask a powerful question
• How to inspire others
• How to mobilize diverse people
• How to thrive in any team
• How to lead change
• How to overcome adversity and failure
We will host another lineup of speakers who are at the top of their field. You will also experience
leadership first hand through weekly workshops and by working with community organizations.
Paradigms & Strategies of Leadership provides you with a solid foundation of leadership themes and issues, which you can build on for the rest of your life. After the course ends, you can also decide whether you’d like to earn Northwestern’s Leadership Certificate by enrolling in the Undergraduate Leadership Program.
