General Questions about the Program

Applications are available on our website. Click here to view the application instructions and download your application.
We admit 168 students to begin the program each spring. Juniors who indicate they can complete the program receive preference since this is their last opportunity to join the program. We encourage freshman and sophomores to still apply. The applicants get selected based on a random draw where some value is placed on lab time availability and program completion plan.
See the program requirements in the About the Program section.
No. ULP is an academic certificate program. However, program completion is indicated on your transcript.
Yes. If selected you will simply take the courses you missed when you're back on campus. Even if you cannot complete the program within a year of your start date, for whatever reason, you can still participate and we encourage you to apply.

Paradigms & Strategies of Leadership

It is not recommended that students take Paradigms and Strategies of Leadership as a fifth class. In the past, some students taking five courses have had to drop this class due to its time-consuming nature. Freshmen are strongly discouraged from taking Paradigms as a fifth class.
No. We put a lot of effort into making groups that are as academically and socially diverse as possible to ensure rich discussion and challenging decision-making. Putting students with friends hinders learning and risk taking.
If you have a problem with your lab time you can fill out a "Request to Change Lab" form and place it on the bulletin board at the ULP house. If you are able to make a switch, both parties must contact someone at the ULP house by calling 847-467-1367 or by e-mailing
ulp@northwestern.edu
Switching labs is not permitted once finals week of winter quarter begins. If you are not able to make a switch you will need to make your assigned lab time work for you or withdraw from the class.
ULP lectures are no longer on Thursday nights. Instead, they are on Mondays from 3:30-4:50 pm. So there should be no problem if you're taking Biology this quarter.
This should no longer be an issue since lectures are on Mondays from 3:30-4:50 pm. Try to avoid a lab time on Thursday evening though.

Outdoor Leadership Retreat

No.
No. We go two days because the facilitators cannot host all of us at one time.
Yes. This experience is unique to our program and provides an opportunity for you, the student, to build team skills for your lab group.
No. It is important to go the day you are assigned because everyone in your lab will be going and doing adventure education/team building activities together. In the past, this has been a pivotal experience for lab group bonding. You should do your best to attend the day you are assigned to go in order to reap the most benefit.
Absolutely not. Driving is a huge liability for Northwestern and could have major repercussions for the program and the University.
This is yet to be determined. In the past though, retreat attendance did not affect your Gen_Cmn 204 grade.

Macro Course

Starting for the entering class of spring 2008, the macro course must be taken after you complete Gen_Cmn 204.
No. You have until you graduate to complete this requirement. We strongly recommmend you complete this requirement as soon as practicable.
Turn in a grade report to Greg with the course highlighted.
Yes, complete a Course Petition form.
Yes. As long as the professor for that class allows it.

Fall and Winter Leadership Education Seminar

Yes. You can take the quarters out of order, if you will be abroad in the Fall quarter.
By the end of each quarter of the Leadership Education Seminar you need to have attended any combination of six: internal speakers, external speakers, and workshops. So, if you miss one class, it is all right as long as you complete six requirements.
Yes. Although the Leadership Education Seminar is a course requirement for the certificate, the course carries zero credit, so CAESAR does not recognize it as a course.
Yes. After the first course, Paradigms & Strategies of Leadership is completed, the remaining requirements of ULP can be taken out of sequence.
Students may complete up to eight requirements per quarter.
External speakers can be any speaker that is in a position of leadership or brings about change in a social or economic environment.
For more detailed specifications, please view the "Leadership Education Seminar" page.
You are allowed a limit of two external speakers per quarter, and a maximum of three across both quarters.
Your speaker does not need to be approved as long as you have followed the criteria listed on the ULP website. If you are in doubt about your selected external speaker, please contact a ULP staff person.
No. You can only count a speaker once. So if you see Bill White out of class, you can count him as an external speaker, but you cannot then see him speak again in class and count it as an internal speaker. You might prefer to see speakers like Bill White talk in class since they will be talking specifically about leadership topics.
Workshops will be held at the ULP house and are offered several times throughout the quarter on those Tuesdays nights when we have no scheduled speakers. To sign up, check the perpetual blackboard site for instructions in the Courses Tab.
Cancellations must be made on the aquavite system 24 hours in advance. Failure to cancel ahead of time will result in loss of credit and/or future penalties in signing up for workshops in future quarters.
In both quarters of the Leadership Education Seminar you need to complete six requirements, choosing from internal speakers, external speakers, and workshops. We only sponsor five speakers a quarter so you will need to choose either an external speaker or a workshop to complete the six requirements.
In the past we have had a total of 12 speakers. If you participated in the winter Leadership Education Seminar and attended the eight speakers we had, you will only need to complete four more requirements from the new Pick 6! plan.

Community Connections Retreat

No.
No. Driving also is a huge liability for Northwestern and could have major repercussions for the program and the University. Parking is also difficult to find in that area.
If you have an academic or personal conflict that cannot be rescheduled, you should contact someone in the ULP house by calling 847-467-1367 or by e-mailing ulp@northwestern.edu prior to the retreat. We will work with students on a one-to-one basis to determine an adequate make up policy based on what portions of the retreat will be missed.
Yes. This retreat is only offered during fall quarter so if you cannot make it up during the current quarter make sure you plan to make it up the following fall quarter.

Externships and Self-Interview

No. The new Self Study Learning Contract has replaced the externships and self-interview requirements. The Learning Contract is more flexible and allows you to pursue leadership questions that you find compelling.

eople who are not just your friends, but people who see you in different settings (Such as supervisors, co-workers, team mates, professors, etc.). Most of all, you should ask people who can be honest and thoughtful.
