Administration and Planning - ARCHIVED CERTIFICATION

The Office of Administration and Planning was eliminated in 2023 and its functions were incorporated into the Office of the President and the Office of the Provost.

The Office of Administration and Planning is a team of 14 employees located within the Rebecca Crown Center in Evanston. The group started their certification process when staff member Marcela Swenson organized a Green Team to bring attention to energy loss and waste in the office.

One of the main challenges in getting stared was garnering participation in the office. However, staff members were encouraged to make changes through discussion of green practices during meetings. They implemented sustainable practices including stocking the kitchen with reusable items and giving reusable utensils to staff members as holiday presents. Swenson also gives sustainability information to new employees in the orientation process, so employees understand this core value of the university and department.

Swenson noted a change she’s most proud of is the overall reduction of waste in the office. The office even changed from a Keurig, which can produce a lot of waste through the pods, to a communal coffee pot that generates less waste.
