Celebrate Earth Week at Northwestern

Earth WeekApril 22 is Earth Day, and Northwestern student groups, offices, and departments are planning environmentally themed events throughout the month of April. Here are some of the ways you can get in on the celebration.

Green Lacrosse Game, Sunday, April 17, 12 pm
The Athletics Sustainability Committee has designated the April 17 Lacrosse game a Green Game! As Northwestern faces off against Rutgers in their last regular season home game, student organizations will raise awareness about sustainability issues and will volunteer to increase recycling rates during the event.

ENERGY STAR Photo Booth, Monday, April 18 and Wednesday, April 20, 11 am - 1 pm
Stop the ENERGY STAR photo booth at Norris on Monday or at Tech on Wednesday to learn about energy efficiency efforts at Northwestern. Share what makes you an energy star to be entered to win prizes.

Beyond the Seal Screening, Tuesday, April 19, 7 pm – 8 pm
Join the Buffet Institute for Global Studies for a screening of “Beyond the Seal,” a documentary created by two Northwestern alums, Leah Varjacques and Katherine Nagasawa, about Fair Trade bananas and the people behind a movement to change the banana industry.

Mount Trashmore, Friday, April 22, 11 am – 3 pm
Visit Mount Trashmore in front of Lunt Hall to see how much trash Northwestern’s Evanston campus typically generates. Learn how you can help shrink the mountain of trash. Free waste-reduction items will be available while supplies last.

Wildcat Blackout, Friday, April 22, 7:30 pm - 10 pm
Engineers for a Sustainable World will host a competition to turn off lights around campus. Come out to have fun while helping to conserve energy.

Environmental Day of Service, Saturday, April 23, 9 am – 11 am
Northwestern’s Associated Student Government will team up with the City of Evanston to host a volunteer day at Ingraham Park at 2100 Ridge Ave. Join other Northwestern volunteers to clean up this park, located just a few blocks west of the Evanston campus.  

Arbor Day Tree Planting, Friday, April 29, 9 am – 11 am and 12 pm – 2 pm
Celebrate Arbor Day at Northwestern by helping to plant a tree on campus. Participants will also learn about the trees found on campus about how the grounds crews care for our urban forest. Pizza will be provided for participants. Sign up by April 27.
