Celebrate spring by biking to campusBike2Campus begins Monday, April 21 and ends Friday, April 25. Coinciding with Earth Week, Bike2Campus encourages the NU community to embrace alternate transportation, celebrate warmer weather, participate in a friendly competition, and endorse cycling awareness.
Any student, faculty, or staff member at NU can participate by simply riding their bike at least once throughout the week and logging it on the Bike2Campus site. Participants are also encouraged to post photos of themselves riding on the Bike2Campus Facebook page with the hashtag #bike2campus. Finally, the first 10 participants to take the Illinois Bike Safety Quiz will receive a Chipotle free burrito card by sharing a photo of their certification of completion on the sustainNU Facebook page with the #bike2campus hashtag.
The purpose of Bike2Campus is to promote bike riding and bike safety. Biking is a low cost, environmentally friendly method of transportation that reduces stress and significantly improves quality of life. The competition was organized by staff members from the School of the Art Institute Chicago, City Colleges of Chicago, Columbia College Chicago, Dominican University, Illinois Institute of Technology, Loyola University - Chicago, Northwestern University, Roosevelt University, University of Illinois-Chicago (UIC), and University of Chicago (UofC).
The school with the highest percentage of participation wins the Divvy Bike2Campus trophy and yearlong Divvy memberships. The top participant who logs the most trips at each school wins a 1-year Divvy membership. And the participant with the photo that gets the most ‘likes’ on the Bike2Campus Facebook page is awarded a photo shoot with Divvy. Even if you’re not the most ambitious cycler, just participating gives you the chance to win other prizes and giveaways, such as bike tune-ups, Chipotle free burrito cards, Divvy 24-hour passes, Kozie Prery bike hats, and bike tire repair tube patch kits.
Chipotle free burrito cards and Divvy 24-hour passes will be given away to cyclists on Evanston’s campus at in front of Lunt Hall on Tuesday, April 22 from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm and on Thursday, April 24 near Annenburg Hall from 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm. Giveaways on Chicago’s campus will take place on Superior St. between the Ward Building and Wieboldt Hall on Wednesday, April 23 from 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm. Be sure to stop by!
Helpful safety tips and the Illinois Bike Safety Quiz were created to highlight safe cycling, such as what to wear when biking, how to get comfortable with traffic, effective trip planning, how to take bikes on public transit, and suggestions for parking/locking your bike. Be sure to always ride with a helmet, position lights on the front and back of your bike, bring a lock, and remember bikes are illegal on the sidewalks!
If you have a bike, but it needs minor repairs, take advantage of the handy bike repair stations in front of Foster-Walker residence hall and near Norris University Center.
