Interested in Study
Abroad?
Here's what you need to do:
1.
Interested in Studying Abroad?
Step 1: Take the mandatory Study Abroad 101 Quiz on Blackboard. You can take the quiz as many times as needed to score a 90% or above. To register for the quiz, send an email to studyabroad@northwestern.edu with "Study Abroad 101" in the subject line. Include your name and net ID in the email. You can begin taking the quiz provided you have:
Sent an email to studyabroad@northwestern.edu requesting to be
registered for the quiz; and
Received a confirmation email from the Study Abroad Office notifying you that you have been registered. Be patient! This can take up to one week.
Please note that students planning on applying to a Northwestern-run summer program only do NOT need to complete the 101 Quiz and should instead consult the individual summer program pages for application instructions.
Step 2: After successfully earning a 90% or above on the quiz, stop by the Study Abroad Office (630 Dartmouth Place) to pick up the NU Application for Permission to Study Abroad. This application is not available online.
Students interested in Study Abroad in 2009-10 are free to take the quiz now and then pick up the application later in the year or in the fall of 2008.
Step 3: (Strongly recommended, but not required) Schedule an appointment with a Study Abroad Adviser to discuss program options and specific concerns. For students interested in studying abroad on a Non-Northwestern summer program, this step IS required and students should plan on meeting with a study abroad advisor well in advance of the March 5 summer deadline.
Step 4: Apply to study abroad.
June 2: Winter/Spring 2009 application deadline
The deadlines for Fall/Full Year 2009-10 will be posted in Fall 2008.

Tip: The more you learn - about the place you want
to go, about how to make the most of your experience, etc.
- the more meaningful your time abroad will be (and the better
chance you'll have of being approved to study abroad).
7. Start working on your study abroad applications.
Tip: Start at least one month before the Northwestern
deadline - the application takes some time.
8. Submit your applications to Northwestern and your study
abroad programs by the deadlines:
Northwestern Deadlines Fall/Full-Year Study Abroad: First Week of February
Winter-Spring Study Abroad: First Week of June
Program Deadlines
See program literature/Web
sites
9. If your application is preliminarily approved by Northwestern:
attend the mandatory pre-departure orientation and
submit your pre-departure
forms. All students who plan to study abroad are REQUIRED
to attend the pre-departure orientation. Here are the dates-make
sure to keep your schedule open!
Students applying for separate study abroad programs
for Fall and Winter and/or Spring Quarters must apply by the
Fall/Full Year deadline. For example, if you apply to Sweet
Briar's Seville program for the Fall, and IES' Paris program
for Winter/Spring, you must submit your Northwestern Application
for Permission to Study Abroad by the Fall/Full Year deadline
IMPORTANT NOTE:
All students who wish to earn credit for study abroad—whether it is for a term-length program, full academic year, or a SUMMER program--MUST apply to Northwestern for permission to study abroad by the appropriate Northwestern application deadline PRIOR to the commencement of the program. Retroactive applications for study abroad credit of any kind will NOT be accepted. This is to ensure that students find appropriate programs offering coursework that may transfer back to Northwestern University and are able to take full advantage of the support services offered on campus prior to departure.
