Renewable Outside Scholarships
Students who receive renewable outside scholarships should check with the donor to ensure that the scholarship may be used for study abroad. They should also be sure that the scholarship check is sent to the Office of Financial Aid at 1801 Hinman Ave., 2d Floor, Evanston, IL 60208-1270.

Study Abroad Scholarships
Students are welcome to pursue outside scholarships for study abroad. It is important to note, however, that for students receiving other forms of financial assistance, need-based scholarships from outside sources will replace Northwestern University grant dollars, not loans. Merit-based awards will generally be used to replace loans. Students should also note that all awards from host institutions will replace Northwestern University grant dollars, whether or not the criteria are need- or merit-based. If you are considering applying for an outside scholarship and are a recipient of need-based financial aid, please consult with the Assistant Director for Financial Services to ascertain how the scholarship may affect your award package. For information about financial aid eligibility while studying abroad, please see the main page of this section.

Below youíll find links to scholarships that other Northwestern University students have used for study abroad. In looking for scholarship opportunities, you may also wish to check the search engines listed on the Financial Aid Office's homepage, or review scholarship books held by the Assistant Director for Financial Services. Scholarships for study or research abroad after graduation may be pursued at the Office of Fellowships.

Deutsche Akademischer Austauchdienst (DAAD)
(German Academic Exchange Service)
Several types of grants are awarded by DAAD to assist students in language or cultural study and/or thesis research. Awards may be used during academic year or summer programs. Students can find scholarship requirements and information about living and studying in Germany on the DAAD website.

The National Security Education Program (NSEP)
The National Security Education Program is designed to increase the number of American students studying the culture or language of countries and regions less often visited by Americans. The scholarship may not be used for study in English-speaking countries or those in North America or Western Europe. Language fluency is not required unless the student intends to study in French or Spanish (for example, in Francophone Africa). The list of target countries may change each year, and students must check the NSEP Web page for updated information before beginning the application process.

Freeman
The Freeman scholarship is intended to encourage more students to study in East and Southeast Asia. Language fluency is not required. Awards may be used during the academic year or summer.

Simpson Scholarships in Egyptology
In the past, the American University in Cairo awarded a few Simpson Scholarships in Egyptology to outstanding students of all nationalities who were of junior or senior standing in a college or university outside of Egypt at the time they applied to AUC (a Northwestern-affiliated program). Simpson scholarships provided an award of $2500 per semester (not to exceed two consecutive semesters) to undergraduate students who enrolled in the Study Abroad Program at the American University in Cairo and concentrated their studies in Egyptology. Applicants needed their home university's permission to study abroad and needed to be accepted by AUC for fall-only, spring-only, or full academic year study. Scholarship recipients were required to enroll in a minimum of three Egyptology courses for each semester they received the award and were required to maintain a 3.3 GPA in these courses for the scholarship to be renewed for the second semester. For more information, contact AUC's New York Office at aucegypt@aucnyo.edu.
