Applying to Study Abroad during
Fall, Winter, and Spring Quarters

This section of our Web site is very important because it not only explains the application process, but lays out very clearly the kind of preparation that Northwestern expects students to do before being approved to study abroad. In addition, it provides clear instructions regarding how to create a strong application.

We encourage you to read this section thoroughly when you first start thinking about study abroad, and then to refer to it again before you start filling out the Northwestern application.

Keep in mind that while Northwestern encourages students to consider study abroad, we do not guarantee the right to study abroad. Rather, we view study abroad as a privilege that students must earn by meeting certain requirements.

Our goal is not to prevent students from studying abroad. On the contrary, it is to ensure that students are sufficiently prepared to make the most out of a study abroad experience, both academically and personally. We welcome the opportunity to work closely with you to help you obtain the necessary preparation. This takes some advanced planning, so complete a Study Abroad 101 Quiz early in your Northwestern career, and then make an appointment to talk to us individually. We're here to help you succeed!
