Northwestern Study Abroad Requirements
Northwestern has a number of requirements that students
must adhere to while they are abroad, including requirements
that are particular to individual programs. To view these
requirements, click here.
Please note that the list of affiliated study abroad programs below includes only programs that specialize in Art and/or Art History. There are many other affiliated programs that offer courses in this field.

- College of Visual and Performing Arts program offers a wide variety of studio courses for students at all levels, including beginners (slides/portfolio required)
- The Syracuse Center offers drawing, mixed media, painting, photography, print-making, restoration, and sculpture
- Florentine studios offer fiber arts, sculpture, metal-smithing, printmaking, surface pattern design, and painting restoration
- The Syracuse Center offers Italian art history courses at all levels, including many field trips in Florence and around Italy
- Most courses taught in English
- Northwestern students have a language prerequisite of one year or the equivalent of college-level Italian

University College London (Arcadia University)

- The Slade School of Fine Art is world-renowned for traditional studio arts and art history. Serious art students may apply to the full-time Independent Studio Programme in painting, sculpture, or fine art media (including print, film and video, photography and electronic media). (No other programs are available; students may not enroll in individual courses at The Slade.) Students work in independent studios with a personal tutor in addition to taking studio and seminar courses. The application requires a portfolio and is due early, in February. Students in this program are charged a special course fee.
- The Art History Department only accepts Art History majors. However, non-majors may enroll in introductory art history courses after arriving in London, if space is available. Art history courses include multiple gallery visits.

Goldsmiths College (Arcadia University )

- World-renowned for conceptual studio arts (slides/portfolio required) and art history.
- Studio arts courses include painting, photography, textiles, printmaking, and drawing.
- Serious studio arts students should plan to study at Goldsmiths for the full year to develop an individualized study program and receive their own studio space. Students may combine art courses with courses in other departments.

University of Edinburgh (Arcadia University)

- History of Art offers art history courses on many aspects of Western art from the early Middle Ages to the 20th century. There are opportunities to study Film Studies, Architectural History, and areas of non-Western art such as Islamic and Chinese art (the latter taught by a lecturer who is also a curator at the National Museums of Scotland). The Department also offers a number of courses on architectural history. For more information, see the University of Edinburgh site.
- Courses make extensive use of the superb collections of old master and modern art in the National Galleries of Scotland.
- Edinburgh is home to a number of other well-known art museums. The distinguished holdings of the National Museums of Scotland include Chinese and Tribal art, as well as the single most important collection on the culture of Scotland, with especially interesting examples of early Celtic and Pictish art. There are several significant western medieval and Islamic manuscripts in Edinburgh libraries. The National Monuments Record is an invaluable resource for students interested in Scottish architecture and monuments. The University's own Talbot Rice Gallery has a permanent collection of paintings and sculpture, and mounts a regular program of temporary exhibitions.
- Edinburgh is capital city of great architectural interest and hosts the Edinburgh Festival, one of the principal international arts festivals. Major special exhibitions are held in a variety of public and commercial galleries. In Summer 2004, for example, one could view exhibitions devoted to Venetian Sixteenth Century Painting, Eduardo Paolozzi, Alison Watt, Etruscan Art, Dutch Painting of the Golden Age, Fred Tomeselli and Jasper Johns.

Earning Major/Minor Credit Abroad
- Research the course descriptions of the classes you plan to take abroad so your advisor can consult them and ensure the classes correspond to major/minor requirements at Northwestern.
- Figure out which courses you want to take at NU when you return from study abroad. This is necessary because not all courses are offered every quarter.
- For credit in your major, meet with your departmental advisers (listed below) well ahead of time.
