Program Description:

Seminars in public health and contemporary South Africa; site visits to course related public institutions, grass roots organizations, private agencies; excursions to Cape Town, Robben Island, Cape of Good Hope, Table Mountain, Cape Muslim; community, and other places of historical and ecological interest.

Course Type:

A set curriculum of courses is offered:

  • Public Health in South Africa: HIV/AIDS
  • Research Seminar in HIV/AIDS
  • Contemporary South Africa: A Political Economy Perspective
  • South African Languages and Cultures: Xhosa and Afrikaans

 

Additional Information:

All participants in programs sponsored by the Office of International Program Development must purchase health insurance coverage from HTH Worldwide. For more details, click here.

 

Housing:

Dormitories on-campus. Single rooms with private bathrooms and shared kitchen facilities.

 

Program Costs:

Program fee of $7,675 includes tuition for four courses, housing, excursions, class materials and (estimated) international round-trip airfare from Chicago to South Africa. Students are responsible for the Study Abroad Administration Fee, health insurance, board and personal expenses.

 

Approximate Program Size: 12-15 students (tentative)
Application Requirements for this Program:
  1. All study abroad students must complete the mandatory Study Abroad 101 Quiz on Blackboard.  Call (847-467-6400) or e-mail studyabroad@northwestern.edu (include your name and net ID) to be registered for this quiz.
  2. After completing the 101 Quiz with a score of 90% or above, students can pick up the Northwestern University Application for Permission to Study Abroad at the Study Abroad Office. This application is not available online.
  3. Students must complete the Northwestern University Application for Permission to Study Abroad by the specified deadline.
  4. As for all IPD programs, students must interview with the IPD office and fill out their application form, located here.
