» General Information

Location:

Dunedin, New Zealand (South Island; population 120,000)

Description:

Founded in 1869, the University of Otago is New Zealand's first university and has earned an international reputation for the quality of its research and teaching. With over 25,000 student, 2,500 of which are international students, Otago offers a diverse student community that reflects New Zealand's own multicultural population.

As a direct university enrollment program, Northwestern students will be able to experience first hand what it’s like to be a student in New Zealand; they will have access to nearly all the same opportunities and courses as Kiwi students and will rely on the University of Otago International Office for support. This is is a program for independent students who are looking to immerse fully into regular Kiwi life.

About Dunedin:
Originally a Scottish settlement during the gold rush of the 1800's, Dunedin is a coastal city in the southern part of the South Island and is considered the only true "college town" of New Zealand as a large percentage of the population is students.  Outdoor activities such as hiking, swimming, surfing, biking, camping and sporting events are favorites of the locals here.  The heart of the city is lined with restaurants and sidewalk cafes. Modern shopping complexes trade alongside boutiques, galleries and weekly craft markets. Dunedin is also famous for its unique flora and fauna, with coastal colonies of rare Yellow-eyed penguins, and the world's only mainland breeding colony of the Royal Albatross. Dunedin's green belt and its many parks and gardens add to the natural appeal of the city.

Northwestern Requirements

Northwestern requires that students enroll in at least the following amount of credits (points) at the University of Otago:

  • Fall Semester or Spring Semester (Winter-Spring Quarters):  54-72 points (3-4 courses)
  • Full Year:  108-144 points (6-8 courses)

Program Requirements

  • Northwestern students applying to the University of Otago are required to purchase the Studentsafe-University plan, available directly through the University of Otago. New Zealand universities are subject to very stringent regulations about the level and type of student insurance acceptable (as per the government's Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students, mandated by the New Zealand government for all education institutions in New Zealand).
  • Students who have been accepted to Otago must sign up for Studentsafe-University on the commitment form that Otago sends in the "Offer of Place" packs, and Otago will then directly enroll them in the plan. Students on this plan will be fully insured before they leave home, although they do not pay their premium until they arrive in Dunedin. Insurance coverage begins the moment students leave home to travel to Dunedin, providing that their journey takes place within 31 days of the start of the course they have enrolled for. Following the above requirements will ensure that the students are fully compliant with the New Zealand Government's requirements.
  • NOTE: Northwestern students must purchase HTH Worldwide Insurance, in addition to New Zealand's mandated Studentsafe-University plan.
