Melbourne, Australia (Population 3.5 million)

Description:

Situated near the heart of downtown Melbourne and within walking distance of hundreds of cafes and restaurants, the University of Melbourne is one of Australia's top five institutions.  With more than 30,000 students and nearly 2,000 teaching staff, students can choose from a variety of courses.  Faculties of Architecture, Arts, Economics and Commerce, Education, Engineering, Land and Food Resources, Music and Science are all popular among study abroad students.

About Melbourne:

Melbourne, Australia's second largest city with more than 3.5 million people, is a city of neighborhoods. From the inner-city areas like Carlton with Lygon Street where Melbourne's café culture was born, to St. Kilda Beach, with it's second-hand shops and funky cafes, you'll never run out of places to explore.

Melbourne is internationally recognized for all of the great cultural and sporting events it has to offer. Whether it's the Australian Ballet, Opera Australia, an Aussie Rules Football Match, or the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, there is plenty going on at all times of year.

Northwestern Requirements

NU students cannot receive credit at Northwestern for the following courses offered by the Faculty of Education at the University of Melbourne--both special courses taught just for study abroad students:

  • Students interested in the course "Education in Natural Landscapes" should consider enrolling instead in "Exploring Central Australia," a course taught by the Australia Centre in the Faculty of Arts for which students may receive Northwestern credit.
  • "School Experience - International" is a course that involves a teaching practicum in a local school. Northwestern students may not enroll in this course as part of their regular course load.

  • Fall Semester program begins in early July and ends in November.
  • Spring Semester program begins in early February and ends in late June.
  • Full Year is either February through November (the Australian academic year) or early July through late June (the U.S. academic year). Students can choose either option.

Housing

On-campus Residential Colleges with Australian students or Student Apartments with other international students.

  • Accommodations in Residential Colleges at the University of Melbourne, such as University College and Ormond College, are extremely limited and competitive. The Residential Colleges in Australia are not similar to a U.S. dorm; rather, they are small living communities geared toward increasing student involvement in overall campus life. Students applying to live in residential colleges should do so with the goal of becoming a part of the residential college community, as social involvement is key to a successful semester and is expected of all residents. Though University of Melbourne's Residential Colleges are considered on-campus, students should expect a 15-20 minute walk to campus.
  • Given the competitive nature of Residential College placements, most Arcadia students live in self-catered Student Apartments at RMIT Village and College Square Lygon.
  • For detailed University of Melbourne housing descriptions, visit Arcadia's website.
