Description:

Located in one of Europe's most cosmopolitan and dynamic cities, Northwestern's customized summer program in Barcelona gives students the unique opportunity to increase their Spanish language skills while experiencing first-hand the city's architectural, artistic, and multi-cultural wonders.

The Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) is one of the leading institutions in Spain, known for its international environment and cutting edge academics. UPF has collaborated with the Northwestern Department of Spanish and Portuguese to create a special program for Northwestern students. Northwestern faculty member Elisa Baena will teach a course on modern Spain and serve as Resident Director on the program.

The university is centrally located in the heart of the city, close to La Rambla, the waterfront, and Ciutadella Park. The program will offer Spanish language and culture courses, focusing on the city of Barcelona and the region of Catalonia. Through a combination of coursework and excursions, students will experience a city and culture where modernity and tradition go hand in hand.

Language Requirements

  • At least one year of college-level Spanish.
  • Students must also enroll in a Spanish course during Northwestern's fall 2011, winter 2012, or spring 2012 quarter in order to apply.

Program Requirements

Cumulative GPA of 3.0.

Academic Specialties

Spanish Language, the History and Culture of Spain, Barcelona, and Catalunya.

Course Type

Students will enroll in one language track (grammar & conversation) and one content course, depending on their Spanish level:
  • Intermediate Spanish Grammar & Conversation: ideally for students who have completed Spanish 101-1,2,3 or 115-1,2 (2 credits)
  • Advanced Spanish Grammar & Conversation: ideally for students who have completed the Spanish 121 sequence, 125 and/or 199 (2 credits)
  • Superior Spanish Grammar & Conversation: ideally for students who have completed Spanish 201 or beyond (2 credits)
  • Culture and Society of Modern Spain: 1 section for intermediate level students, 1 section for advanced/superior level students (1 credit)

Please read carefully the following stipulations regarding courses taken on this program:

  • If you would like to receive specific Spanish major or minor credit from the courses taken abroad, you must take a placement exam during the final week of the program to determine the type of credit you are eligible for within the Spanish Department and also which course level you will place into on campus.
  • Intermediate students may have the opportunity to pass out of the second year of the Weinberg (WCAS) language requirement on this program; however, it is not guaranteed. Students must take the placement exam with the Spanish Department upon completion of the program and credit will be awarded depending on the Department's evaluation of your progress.
  • Students hoping to fulfill distribution requirements on this program should check with their specific schools to determine their policy on transferring distribution credit from abroad.

Please note: the Spanish Department makes the final determination regarding the type of Spanish credit a student can earn from this program.

Excursions:
  • The program includes a full weekend excursion to Madrid (required for all students) and excursions offered by UPF.  
  • Possible optional short day or afternoon excursions in Barcelona include trips to: the Museu Picasso, famous Antoni Gaudí works (including La Sagrada Familia, Casa Batlló, and La Pedrera), and the Palau de la Música.
  • Possible half day excursions may include Montserrat and Montjuic.

Housing

Residence halls:
  • Students will be housed in the RESA Residencia Campus Del Mar, located in the Barceloneta neighborhood, a ten-minute walk to the UPF Main Ciutadella Campus where classes will be held. The residence hall rooms resemble small apartments and each is equipped with: a bathroom, kitchen, air conditioning, closet space, television, telephone, desk, and Internet access. Students will be placed in shared rooms. The Residencia also has a 24-hour reception desk, a night security guard, a small computer lab, laundry facilities, vending machines, a study lounge, and is located near many grocery stores and markets where students can purchase food to cook their own meals, if they wish. The Residencia is near two Metro stops and is also within walking distance of many of the popular neighborhoods of central Barcelona, including the Barri Gotic, La Ribera and the Borne District.

    Depending on the size of the summer 2012 program, some students may need to transfer to a nearby hotel for the final 3 days of the program due to room shortages at the RESA dorm.

Program Costs

Summer 2012 Fees: $8,400

This fee includes tuition, housing, Madrid weekend excursion, 3 group dinners, program cell phone, program excursions & activities, the Study Abroad Administrative Fee, and dorm deposit (refundable at end of program if room is damage free).

Additional expenses, which are the responsibility of the student, are estimated to be $3,600 and include flight, in-country transportation, food, HTH health insurance, books, cell phone cards, and personal expenses.

Financial Aid: Northwestern students receiving financial aid during the academic year may be eligible for summer aid for this program. Study Abroad Office Scholarships: The Study Abroad Office will offer a limited number of need-based scholarships, ranging from $1,000-$3,000, to eligible Northwestern students applying to study abroad on the Barcelona summer program. To be considered for a need-based summer study abroad scholarship, please complete a Scholarship Form by March 1, 2012 and submit it to the Study Abroad Office.

Undergraduate Language Grants: Undergraduate Language Grants (ULG) support the intensive and experiential learning of foreign languages.  The Office of the Provost will award up to $4,000 to help defray the costs of intensive language study abroad or in the United States. Application Requirements

Students applying to the Barcelona Summer program must:

  • Participate in a group interview. Interviews will be held regularly at Norris from mid Nov - late Feb. Please review the interview schedule and call the Study Abroad Office (847-467-6400) to reserve a place in a timely manner. This informal group interview will allow you to articulate your goals for the program and ask any questions you may have. You'll also receive a comprehensive overview of the program.
  • Before your scheduled interview you must download and complete an interview form, then email it to Robin Leephaibul, Assistant Director of Study Abroad.
  • Complete a Northwestern Summer Study Abroad Application by March 1, 2012.

Note: Make sure you passport is valid through January of the following year. If you are planning to apply to this program and you do not yet have a passport (or need to renew your current passport), you should begin this process as soon as possible so that it is completed by the time of application in early March.  The processing time for a passport application is approximately 6-8 weeks.
