Description:

This program offers intense language instruction and coursework at the Instituto Internacional en España and/or the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. In addition to courses and/or an internship, students participate in day and weekend excursions. All courses are taught in Spanish by Spanish faculty or the Resident Director.

Language Requirements

  • Level I: 1 year of Spanish
  • Level II: 2.5 years of Spanish (7 quarters, including Spanish 199-0)
    Recommended: Completion of one 200-level class
  • Level III (Spring/Full Year only): 3 years of Spanish

Northwestern Requirements

  • Full Year/Spring Semester Only - Level II: Each semester you are abroad, you must take at least two "regular" University courses, defined as a course taught in the host language, for local university students, not study abroad students. Full year students may have the skills to move up to Level III by Spring Semester, which would entail taking all of your courses at the University. If you are qualified for Level III, we encourage you to advance to that program.
  • If you have declared a Major or Minor in Spanish, or are thinking of doing so: the Department of Spanish and Portuguese will accept petitions to receive major or minor credit for a regular course taken at the University only if you have completed the entire course and taken the same final assessment as the Spanish students in the course, at the same time.   • Students interested in the internship placement on this program need to read about the policy for transferring internship credit and complete the Northwestern University Petition for Obtaining Credit for an Internship.

Program Requirements

  • Levels I and II applicants must receive grades of B or better in their Spanish courses.
  • Level III applicants must receive grades of B or better in their Spanish courses and a minimum GPA of 3.3.

Academic Specialties

Advanced Spanish language and composition, Spanish literature, culture, history, film and politics, anthropology, archaeology, economics, sociology, psychology, and science.

Course Type

Integrated courses at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (for Spring Semester and Full Year students only) and program courses at Instituto Internacional en España, depending on level:
  • Level I: Language, conversation and civilization courses, taught in Spanish, at the Instituto Internacional en España.
  • Level II: Language study and liberal arts courses, taught in Spanish, at the Instituto Internacional en España. Spring Semester and Full Year students will can also enroll in courses at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid.
  • Level III: Students enroll directly in University classes, with optional semester-long tutorials to assist with university coursework. Level III is available for Spring Semester and Full Year students only; however, some students begin in Level II in the Fall and then advance to Level III in the Spring.

Additional Information

  • There is an internship option for Level II and III students. Internship areas include, advertising, film, health and human services, international organizations, politics and international relations, and social policy.
  • Excellent volunteer opportunities are available through Desarrollo y Asistencia.
  • There are three to four excursions per semester to locations such as Granada, Toledo, Córdoba, Sevilla, and Segovia.
  • Students receive tuition reimbursement for cultural events.
  • Most of the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid's facilities, including libraries, computer labs, and sports facilities, are situated on the 548-acre Cantoblanco Campus located 15km north of Madrid.

Application Requirements

Prior to receiving an application, all Northwestern students must complete the following steps:
  1. Complete the mandatory Study Abroad 101 Quiz on Blackboard.  Call 847-467-6400 or e-mail studyabroad@northwestern.edu (include your name and netID) to register for this quiz.
  2. After receiving a score of 90% or above, students can pick up the Northwestern University Application for Permission to Study Abroad at the Study Abroad Office. This application it is not available online.
Northwestern students must complete two applications for this program:
  1. Boston University program application, available on the Boston University web site.
  2. Northwestern University Application for Permission to Study Abroad.
Note: Accepted students should start their visa process as early as possible.
