Padova Language and Liberal Arts Program - Summer Abroad (Boston University

» General Information

Location:

Padova, Italy (population ca. 250,000)

Description:

Boston University's Language and Liberal Arts program is one of the only American study abroad programs operating in the academically oriented city of Padova, making it an optimal destination for students who have a keen interest in immersing themselves in the language and culture of Italy.  The program offers six weeks of intensive language and cultural study in this university town, located in the hill country 20 miles west of Venice. Classes are held at Boston University’s Center for Italian and European Studies within walking distance of the town’s historic center. A small, serious summer program, it is ideal for students who have studied one or more years of college-level Italian.  Northwestern students have three tracks of study from which to choose: a Liberal Arts Program, a Language Studies Program, and an Advanced Language and Literature Studies Program.

Northwestern Requirements

  • At least 1 year or the equivalent of college level Italian
  • Minimum of 3.0 GPA (in major and overall).
  • All Northwestern students are required to enroll in 8 BU credits while in Padova.

Academic Specialties

Italian Language, Art History, Architecture, Politics, and Literature.

Course Type

While there are 4 academic tracks offered on the summer program, Northwestern students are eligible to enroll in 3 of them: Track I, Track III or Track IV only (Track II is not open to Northwestern students).

Track I: Liberal Arts Program
This track consists of two liberal arts courses taught in English:  Venetian Renaissance Art and Architecture, and The Venetian Republic Politics and Culture of the Serenissima.   Although the courses are taught in English, Northwestern students must have completed Northwestern's one-year college level Italian language requirement prior to the start of the program.

Track III: Language Studies Program
This track is for students who have completed 1 year of college level Italian. It is an intensive intermediate language track that covers an entire year of intermediate Italian at Northwestern.  This 6-week intensive language option will be especially appealing to students who are seeking to complete the WCAS language requirement in an accelerated manner.

Track IV: Advanced Language and Literature Studies Program

This track is for students who have completed 2 years or beyond of college level Italian. Students enroll in 2 liberal arts courses taught in Italian:  Self Expression in Italy (required) and either Contemporary Italian Literature or Primo Levi and the Literature of the Holocaust.

Students will be eligible to earn between 2-3 Northwestern credits for work done on this program. For detailed course descriptions, please visit the Boston University Summer in Padova web page.

Additional Information

Students may combine the summer semester with a fall or full year study abroad on the Padova Language and Liberal Arts Program provided that they plan ahead and complete the necessary applications for both Northwestern and Boston University prior to their summer departure.

Policies:

Planned Excursions: The summer program in Padova provides several guided day excursions conducted in Italian.  Past excursions have included trips to nearby Venice, Verona, Mantova, or Ravenna.  Most weekends will be free for students to travel independently.

Housing

Homestays or student dormitories:
  • Northwestern students will be placed in homestays pending availability; if homestays are not available, students may be placed in student dormitories located in central Padova.
  • A note from Boston University regarding homestays:  "Families chosen to participate in the homestay program represent a wide range of incomes and situations, from an elderly woman living alone in the city to a large suburban family with several children.  For many students, living in an Italian home and commuting to school on local transportation are important parts of experiencing local life.  Students are provided with a single room, continental breakfast, three dinners a week with the host family, and a stipend for other meals not taken with their host family."
