IES Abroad Milan: Music Program
Language Requirements
No previous Italian is required for Music students. Course options are determined by a student's language proficiency and language placement is determined by the results of an on-site language test conducted during orientation.Program Requirements
- 3.0 GPA or better (on a 4.0 scale) and in good standing at home college or university.
- Sophomore, junior, or senior standing when program begins.
- Students complete a Music Placement Form online after being admitted to the IES Abroad Milan program, and auditions take place onsite (for placement purposes only).
Academic Specialties
Music; this program is affiliated for Music majors only.Course Type
Students typically take one to three Music courses each term, combining private lessons with Scuola Civica instructors with theory courses at the Scuola Civica and the IES Center.
- IES Abroad Music Courses - The Performance Workshop offered each semester allows vocalists and instrumentalists to enhance the practice of chamber music, increase performance skills and expand repertoire. Most Music students participate in this ensemble. A Music History course generally explores a topic related to Italy (Fall semester) or Europe (Spring semester).
- Scuola Civica Music Courses - The Sculoa Civica consists of Schools of Jazz, Choral, Classical, Contemporary, and Early Music. Students with no prior Italian may enroll in technique and performance classes. Advanced Italian is required for theory courses, although some English-taught theory courses may be arranged as an independent study. All IES Music students are enrolled as visiting students and, therefore, have access to the Audio Recording Studio and the Media Tech Lab.
- Private lessons (including voice, jazz piano, violin, guitar, composition and perhaps other lessons upon request) can also be arranged by IES in English or Italian.
In addition to Music classes, students can choose from a wide variety of English- and Italian-taught courses taught by local university professors at the IES Abroad Center (including but not limited to Art History, Communications, Film Studies, Literature, Psychology, Political Science, Sociology). Students have the option of enrolling in a for-credit internship seminar and practicum experience.
Students can also take courses at the nearby Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, which offers English-taught Business-related courses and Italian-taught courses in Art History, Communications, Economics, History, Journalism, Law, Literature, Music History, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology.
Housing
Students can choose from two housing options: apartments with 2-6 other IES students or the Collegio di Milano, a residence hall for Italian and international honors students.Program Costs
