Università del Salento in Lecce

» General Information

Location:

Lecce, Italy (population: 90,000)

Description:

Arcadia University's College of Global Studies has collaborated with the Università del Salento in Lecce to create a unique program in the south of Italy designed for students who desire an alternate perspective of Italy than one seen through the lens of northern cities such as Bologna, Padova, or Florence.  The program focuses on intensive Italian language study in conjunction with a variety of English-taught content courses at the University's nationally-renowned Centro Linguistico di Ateneo.  The program also provides advanced students with the unique opportunity to enroll in Italian-taught courses alongside Italian and international students at the Università del Salento.

Studies are supported by a required afternoon Italian language “learning lab” emphasizing aspects of local culture through crafts, dance, folk traditions, and excursions.

Located in the region of Puglia (easily recognized on a map as the "heel" of the Italian "boot"), Lecce has long been a respected center of learning, famous for its mix of ancient, baroque, neo-classical, and fascist architecture. Because of its proximity to the Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas, Lecce was once part of the Magna Grecia (Greek Empire). That influence still remains in a region where Greek dialects are still spoken and Hellenic dishes are served at festivals and holidays. The rocky Salentine coastline that borders the Adriatic and Ionian Seas frequently gives way to beautiful soft-sand beaches that attract bathers nearly 9 months out of the year.
