Description:

This program is unique in that all students spend an entire year in Munich. This creates an environment and academic experience that emphasizes the necessity of a long-term commitment to acquiring excellent language skills and a solid familiarity with the host culture.

The Year of Study Program in Munich, administered by Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon, will provide Northwestern students access to leading research universities in Germany. Over the past 25 years, Munich has added to its south Bavarian charm by becoming a major center for high-tech development and production. The Ludwig-Maximilian University (LMU) and the Technical University (TU) in Munich have played a major role in the development of Munich as a significant hub for research, education and high-tech industrial production.

Northwestern Requirements

Students must take at least one regular course at the University during the fall and two during the spring. We encourage you to take more if you think you are up to the challenge. A "regular course" is defined as a course taught in the host language, for local university students (not study abroad students). This will allow you to experience what it is like to be a local university student.

Academic Specialties

A broad range of courses at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität. All fields represented, both the LM University and the Technical University have been named Elite German Universities by a special committee of the German Bundestag.

Course Type

Intensive language study, program courses + direct university enrollment at LMU and TU.
Courses Offered:
  • Pre-semester Program (1 course): The four-week orientation program includes a variety of tours and excursions that have the students explore the city's historical development. The greater part of the orientation program is made up of an intensive language course that includes 100 hours of classroom instruction.  Students are assigned to one of three levels based on a placement test.
  • Winter and Summer Semesters (4 courses): Courses generally focus on German culture, literature, history and art. The courses are designed to bridge the gap between theory and practice, knowledge and experience. Courses include: Art through the Ages I, Culture and Civilization, Art through the Ages I and II, Poetic Diction, Contemporary Literature: 1990-2001, Nationalism and German Identity, Munich through Artists' Eyes, Escape to Life or From Bavaria to America, Advanced German Review II (Preparation for the DSH), Major Periods of German Literature from the Enlightenment to the Present.

About Munich:
As the third largest city in Germany, and one that has a strong tradition of support for the arts, Munich offers students a broad palette of theater, concert and museums along with a range of recreational activities that are easily available to students through student organizations. The Lewis & Clark program introduces students to these cultural venues by integrating museum visits and theater attendance into program classes.

Housing

Students live in the Studentenstadt, "Student City," about 10 minutes by subway from the university.

Academic Year 2008-2009: $40,944

  • This includes estimated tuition, room, board, books, transportation, personal expenses and SAAF. Please contact Lewis & Clark College for 2009-2010 costs.

Application Requirements

Prior to receiving an application, all Northwestern students must complete the following steps:
  1. Complete the mandatory Study Abroad 101 Quiz on Blackboard.  Call 847-467-6400 or e-mail studyabroad@northwestern.edu (include your name and netID) to register for this quiz.
  2. After receiving a score of 90% or above, students can pick up the Northwestern University Application for Permission to Study Abroad at the Study Abroad Office. This application it is not available online.
Northwestern students must complete two applications for this program:
  1. A Lewis and Clark application, available from the Lewis and Clark web site.
  2. The Northwestern University Application for Permission to Study Abroad.
