IES Abroad Freiburg: Language & Area Studies

» General Information

Location:

Freiburg, Germany

Description:

Freiburg is a beautiful university and medieval cathedral town with a rich educational heritage and close proximity to the French and Swiss borders, the Black Forest, and the Alps. Although Freiburg today is a modern, cosmopolitan city of 200,000 people with a rich cultural life, it still feels quaint and safe and most areas of interest are within easy walking or biking distance of the city center.

Organized in cooperation with the distinguished Albert-Ludwigs-Universität, the program offers rigorous undergraduate study in disciplines such as German Language and Literature, Communications, Economics, History, Humanities, International Relations, Science, and Social Sciences.

Additional Information

About the Terms of Study:
  • The German Department and the Study Abroad Office strongly encourage students to study abroad in Germany for the full year. If students can only study abroad in Germany for one term, we encourage them to do so during the spring semester because they are better prepared in terms of language and they can enroll in regular university courses in Germany.
  • Students who study abroad on the IES Berlin or IES Freiburg programs during the Fall Quarter may only enroll in IES Abroad courses as University courses extend into Winter Quarter.  As indicated above, students interested in enrolling in University courses should consider the full year or Spring semester.
Northwestern is only affiliated with the Language and Area Studies program in Freiburg.  This program offers internship opportunities.  Be sure to read Northwestern's procedures for transferring international internship credit.
