Language Requirements

  • 2 years (4 semesters) or equivalent of college-level German

Northwestern Requirements

Full Year students must take at least one regular University course during the fall and two during the spring. Students staying for Winter-Spring Quarters only must take at least one regular University course.  We encourage you to take more if you think you are up to the challenge. A "regular" course is defined as a course taught in the host language, for local university students (not study abroad students). This will allow you to experience what it is like to be a local university student. Students with advanced language skills are expected to do as much of their course work as possible at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin or Freie Universität.

Program Requirements

  • 3.0 GPA or better and in good standing at home college or university.
  • Sophomore, junior, or senior standing when program begins. Some local university courses may not be available to students of sophomore standing. Please contact your IES Abroad representative for more details.

Academic Specialties

A wide range of courses at many of Berlin's institutions of higher education, including the world famous Humboldt and Technical Universities.

Course Type

Integrated university courses and IES Abroad program courses.

Additional Information

About the Terms of Study:
  • The German Department and the Study Abroad Office strongly encourage students to study abroad in Germany for the full year. If students can only study abroad in Germany for one term, we encourage them to do so during the spring semester because they are better prepared in terms of language and they can enroll in regular university courses in Germany.
  • If spring semester is not an option, we encourage students to study abroad on the Antioch-Tübingen program during Northwestern's fall and winter quarters, so that they can enroll in integrated university courses (which run until late January/early February).
  • Students for whom neither of these terms is an option may study abroad during Northwestern's fall quarter only on IES-Freiburg and IES Berlin.
Note: All IES Abroad programs provide internship opportunities.  Northwestern is only affiliated with the Language and Area Studies track of the Berlin program.

Housing

Student type housing in homes and apartments

Program Costs

Fall 2009: $26,165

  • This includes the estimated cost of tuition, room, board, books, transportation, personal expenses and SAAF. The sample costs provided are for the fall term; for other terms and for the most current cost, contact the sponsoring organization.
