Sweet Briar College: Junior Year in France

» General Information

Location:

Paris, France (Population: 10 million)

Description:

Sweet Briar College: Junior Year in France (JYF) is the oldest coeducational intercollegiate program in Paris and takes full advantage of the city as a classroom for its students. The program is focused on "true immersion" for students, offering courses through the program as well as integrating them into regular university courses with French students, housing in homestays, and opportunities both in and out of the classroom for cultural immersion. The Sweet Briar program is relatively small in size and many of its participants are majoring or minoring in French.  The program begins with a two-week academic pre-session in Tours (Fall and Full Year terms) or Paris (Spring term) to prepare students for life in France and academic work in French universities.

  • The Northwestern Department of French and Italian recommends that students take at least 2-3 200-level French courses at Northwestern before beginning program.

Course Type

Sweet Briar program participants select from a combination of program courses and university courses (directly enrolling in various French universities in Paris).

  • Students may also volunteer to serve as assistants to French teachers of English during the whole year or the second semester. The amount of time involved varies from 2 to 6 hours a week.
