Northwestern Requirements

  • Students must have completed 2 years+ of college French or the equivalent and have the ability to do coursework in French. Students are required to meet with Prof. Margaret Sinclair in the Department of French and Italian in order to assess their language skills prior to application.
  • Full Year students must enroll in at least 60 ECTS credits at Sciences Po; Fall-Winter or Winter-Spring Quarters students enroll in at least 30 ECTS credits.
  • When choosing a world-class institution, careful academic counseling and planning is essential to successful integration into non-American settings. Work with the Office of International Program Development and your departmental/school advisers to make issues such as credit, cultural adjustment and course selection work for you. A high degree of independence and initiative are also qualifications for an exchange program, which often offers less structure and on-site support than other types of programs.

Academic Specialties

Medill students may arrange to do their Teaching Media in Paris through Sciences Po. Interested students should contact Professor Jack Doppelt.

Course Type

Direct university enrollment, including some special courses in the fall just for international students.

Additional Information

  • Students may combine one semester at Sciences Po with one semester at the Internships in Francophone Europe, through our French Field Study Program.
  • Students who successfully complete a full year abroad at Sciences Po have the option of returning to Sciences Po to complete a master’s degree after they graduate from Northwestern. Interested students should talk to the International Office before leaving Paris. An admissions jury will simply review their dossiers at the end of the year and decide whether they can be admitted directly into the "Cycle du diplome."
  • Students may also combine this program with Northwestern's European Union Studies program, or with an internship through IFE (Internships in Francophone Europe).
About the Terms of Study:
The Fall-Winter Quarters program ends during Northwestern's Winter Quarter. Northwestern requires that these students complete the program on site in order to receive any credits for your term abroad. This means that they will not be able to return to the Northwestern campus to take classes during Winter Quarter.

Housing

Apartments or home stays:
  • Students find their own apartments, with the help of the International Office at Sciences Po. Alternatively, Northwestern's Office of International Program Development may be able to arrange for homestays with French families.

  • This includes estimated tuition, room, board, books, transportation, personal expenses. Students on NU exchange programs are exempt from the Study Abroad Administrative Fee.
