Northwestern Requirements

  • Students must have completed at least 2 years or the equivalent of college level French; more is recommended.
  • Students must enroll in a full load of courses as determined by IFE.  All classes are small, taught just for IFE students (in French).
  • Students who apply to this program must identify a faculty adviser at Northwestern for the internship and submit a Northwestern Internship Petition signed by this adviser and their school representative to the Study Abroad Office prior to departure. For more information, read our guidelines for completing an internship abroad for credit.

Program Requirements

Successful applicants combine the following qualifications:
  • A strong scholastic record (e.g. 3.0+ GPA) demonstrating the ability to assimilate large quantities of material, to think synthetically and analytically, and to carry out independent research.
  • French language competency including: (1) the ability to present oneself and express ideas in French, (2) good reading and oral comprehension, (3) an intermediate level of written expressions.
  • The personal and intellectual maturity to survive and to thrive in an intense, cross-cultural experience. Values, assumptions, and viewpoints may be called into question at the same time that a student is expected to respond to a work environment. Most IFE placements require the ability to work within a group structure with individuals who may well be quite different from the student and from those to whom the student is accustomed.
