IES Abroad Nantes

» General Information

Location:

Nantes, France (Population: 600,000)

Description:

The sixth largest city in France, Nantes is large enough to be a bustling cultural and economic center but small enough that IES Abroad Nantes is the only permanent US study abroad program there, offering students ample opportunity to practice their French and integrate into everyday French life as much as possible. Nantes is the perfect setting for those looking for serious integration into French language and culture.  The program also sponsors field trips to beautiful locations in the Loire Valley and western France that are not easily accessible to students.

Northwestern strongly recommends this program for students who are currently majoring or minoring in French, or those considering the option.

Northwestern Requirements

  • At least 2 years or the equivalent of college level French.
  • Full Year students must take at least 1 regular course at a French university during the fall and 2 during the spring. Students staying for the Fall Semester only or Winter-Spring Quarters only must take at least 1 regular course. We encourage students to take more if they are up to the challenge. A "regular course" is defined as a course taught in the host language, for local university students (not study abroad students). This allows students to experience what it is like to be a local university student.
  • The Northwestern Department of French and Italian recommends taking at least 2-3 200-level French courses at Northwestern before beginning the program.
