Description:

The DIS curriculum is subdivided into a number of programs, such as Public Health, Global Economics, Psychology, and Biotechnology & Biomedicine. Students build their own curriculum from over 120 courses taught across a great spectrum of majors, but each through a Danish, Scandinavian or European lens. Interactive classrooms combine expert faculty, guest lectures and field studies to create an intense, experiential learning environment.

Language Requirements

No prerequisites, but Northwestern requires students to enroll in a Danish language course as part of the program.

Northwestern Requirements

Students must enroll in at least 15 credits per semester, which is generally equal to 5 courses.

Important note regarding 1-credit courses: DIS does offer 1-credit courses which students are allowed to enroll in. However, 1-credit courses are not eligible for credit transfer to Northwestern. 1-credit courses would be in addition to a normal 15 credits per semester course load.

Students will enroll in a specific program of study while at DIS, including the core course of that program. Programs open to Northwestern students are:

  • Medical Practice & Policy
  • Migration & Identity*
  • Psychology
  • Public Health

    *The required core course for the Migration & Identity program is only worth 1-credit. Since 1-credit courses are not eligible for credit transfer to Northwestern, students enrolled in this program will also select an additional elective to meet the 15 credits per semester requirement.

Planned Excursions: The programs include a course-integrated study tour within Denmark and Europe.

Other Enrichment Opportunities: Volunteer, internship and comparative field project opportunities are available.

Housing

Students may choose one of the following housing options:

  • Kollegium (Danish student residence hall)
  • Danish host family
  • An apartment with a Danish roommate
  • Folkehojskole (similar to a small American boarding school, but with Danish students)

Program Costs

Fall 2009: $24,460

  • This estimate includes tuition, room, board, transportation, personal expenses and SAAF. The sample costs provided are for the fall term; for other terms and for the most current cost, contact the sponsoring organization.

Application Requirements

Prior to receiving an application, all Northwestern students must complete the following steps:
  1. Complete the mandatory Study Abroad 101 Quiz on Blackboard. Call 847-467-6400 or e-mail studyabroad@northwestern.edu (include your name and netID) to register for this quiz.
  2. After receiving a score of 90% or above, students can pick up the Northwestern University Application for Permission to Study Abroad at the Study Abroad Office. This application it is not available online.
Northwestern students must complete two documents for this program:
  1. A DIS Course Prerequisite Form, which should be submitted with the Northwestern application.
  2. Northwestern University Application for Permission to Study Abroad.
