Description:

CHP was established in the Czech Republic as a high-quality educational center specializing in the liberal arts. The College provides foreign students with the opportunity to interact with Czech faculty and students and regularly offers ten to fifteen courses per semester in the humanities and social sciences such as: comparative literature and art, Czech language and literature, economics, history, Jewish studies, European civilization, philosophy, political science, gender studies, sociology, clinical psychology, geography, and environmental studies.

Language Requirements

No prerequisites, but Northwestern requires students to enroll in a Czech language course as part of the program.

Northwestern Requirements

Students must enroll in 5 courses per semester including one Czech language course and the core course (which consists of the Czech Culture & Civilization course and the Let's Talk Czech course). Students can choose their 3 remaining courses.

Program Requirements

Preference is given to students who have completed university coursework with European content.

Academic Specialties

History, Philosophy, Economics, Political Science, Film Studies, Czech language and Gender Studies.

Course Type

All courses, except Czech Language, are taught in English by professors from Charles University, the Czech Academy of Sciences, and the Central European University. Students will attend classes with students from various U.S. universities.

Additional Information

Planned Excursions:
  • Two or three day-long field trips are organized to visit important historical sites outside of Prague.
  • A three-day trip to Budapest, Hungary.

Fall 2009: $20,964

  • This estimate includes the cost of tuition, room, board, books, transportation, personal expenses and SAAF. The sample costs provided are for the fall term; for other terms and for the most current cost, contact the sponsoring organization.

Application Requirements

Prior to receiving an application, all Northwestern students must complete the following steps:
  1. Complete the mandatory Study Abroad 101 Quiz on Blackboard. Call 847-467-6400 or e-mail studyabroad@northwestern.edu (include your name and netID) to register for this quiz.
  2. After receiving a score of 90% or above, students can pick up the Northwestern University Application for Permission to Study Abroad at the Study Abroad Office. This application it is not available online.
Northwestern students must complete two applications for this program:
  1. CHP program application, available on the CHP web site.
  2. Northwestern University Application for Permission to Study Abroad.
Note: Accepted students must apply for a student visa months before the program start date. A valid passport is needed to apply for the visa.
