IES Abroad Tokyo: Society & Culture

Location:

Makuhari New City, near Tokyo, Japan (Population: 6 million)

Description:

Designed for students seeking a multidisciplinary study of Japan and its people, this program offers Japanese language study at Kanda University of International Studies (KUIS) and English-taught area studies courses at the IES Abroad Center and KUIS.  The program also offers cultural opportunities, field trips, an optional field placement, and Japanese student "ePals" to help students integrate into local student life.



Terms:

Fall Semester (Fall Quarter), Spring Semester, or Full Year. Note: Spring Semester generally begins in late March, so students enroll for Winter Quarter at NU and finish final exams before departure. If students do not take Winter Quarter classes at NU, they must enroll in at least 15 semester credits while abroad.

Language Requirements

1 year of college-level Japanese or the equivalent (with exceptions made for McCormick and Music students).  This is a Northwestern requirement and will apply to students studying abroad beginning 2011-2012 and is in effect for all students who matriculated at Northwestern in Fall 2009 or later.  IES Abroad does not require previous knowledge of Japanese, but strongly recommends it.

Academic Specialties

Japanese Language, Anthropology, International Relations, Economics, History, Political Science, and other disciplines that focus on contemporary Japan.

Course Type

Japanese language courses, English-taught IES Abroad program courses and area studies courses at KUIS.

Additional Information

Field placement option available with required seminar Social Organization of Japan.
