Description:

Direct enrollment in Nanzan University through IES Abroad offers independent students the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in Japanese culture and university life. Nanzan's Center for Japanese Studies specializes in intensive Japanese language study as well as Japanese area studies courses taught in English.

Program Requirements

  • One year of college level Japanese or the equivalent.
  • 3.0 GPA in Japanese language courses.
  • While abroad, all students must enroll in an intensive Japanese language course.

Academic Specialties

Japanese language, Business, History, Japanese Studio Art, Culture, and Politics (all with a focus on Japan).

Course Type

Intensive language and culture courses at the Nanzan University Center for Japanese Studies.

Additional Information

  • Students with advanced Japanese language skills can take area studies courses taught in Japanese.
  • Students can take hands-on Japanese Studio Arts courses such as ikebana, calligraphy, woodblock printing and black ink painting.
  • Volunteer opportunities are available.

Fall 2009: $25,765

  • This includes the estimated cost of tuition, room, board, books, transportation, personal expenses and SAAF. The sample costs provided are for the fall term program; for other terms and for the most current cost, contact the sponsoring organization.

Application Requirements

Prior to receiving an application, all Northwestern students must complete the following steps:
  1. Complete the mandatory Study Abroad 101 Quiz on Blackboard.  Call 847-467-6400 or e-mail studyabroad@northwestern.edu (include your name and netID) to register for this quiz.
  2. After receiving a score of 90% or above, students can pick up the Northwestern University Application for Permission to Study Abroad at the Study Abroad Office. This application it is not available online.
Northwestern students must complete two applications for this program:
  1. IES Abroad program application, available on the IES web site.  *Please not the IES Abroad application deadline.
  2. Northwestern University Application for Permission to Study Abroad.
