Description:

Kyoto, Japan’s imperial capital from 794 to 1868, is a city rich in traditional culture and history. It is one of Japan's most beautiful cities, home to Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines, ancient palaces, and arts and crafts centers.  The Kyoto Consortium for Japanese Studies (KCJS) is a consortium of 14 American universities that sponsors a rigorous, two-semester academic program for undergraduates who wish to do advanced work in Japanese language and cultural studies. The KCJS curriculum provides intensive Japanese language study and the opportunity to choose from a broad spectrum of social sciences and humanities courses on premodern and contemporary Japan.



Terms:

Fall Semester (Fall Quarter), Spring Semester (Winter/Spring Quarters) or Full Year. Preference is given to full year applicants

Program Requirements

  • Fall Semester & Full Year students: 2 years of college-level Japanese or the equivalent.
  • Spring Semester: 2.5 years of college-level Japanese or the equivalent.

Academic Specialties

Japanese language and courses in the humanities and social sciences focusing on premodern and contemporary Japan.

Course Type

KCJS program courses including Japanese language courses and English-taught courses in the humanities and/or social sciences.  An area studies course taught in Japanese is usually offered during the Spring term for advanced level students.

Additional Information

An integral component of the Japanese language program is the Community Involvement Project (CIP), which is designed to support language learning through integration with the local community.  All students pursue a personal interest by participating in volunteer work, joining an activity circle, or privately studying a Japanese art with a mentor.
