Description:

Enrollment in the Faculty of Liberal Arts at Sophia University allows students to study alongside Japanese and other international students in English-taught area studies courses while participating in intensive Japanese language courses. 

Terms:

Fall Semester (Fall-Winter Quarters), Spring Semester (Spring Quarter), or Full Year. Note: Spring Semester begins in March, so students must enroll for Winter Quarter at Northwestern and finish final exams before leaving in Spring. If students do not enroll at NU for Winter Quarter classes, they must enroll in at least 15 semester credits in Tokyo.

Language Requirements

1 year of college-level Japanese or the equivalent (with exceptions made for McCormick and Music students).  This is a Northwestern requirement and will apply to students studying abroad beginning 2011/2012 and is in effect for all students who matriculated at Northwestern in Fall 09 or later.  CIEE recommends 1 college-level Japanese language course.

Academic Specialties

Japanese language, Business and Economics, History, Political Science, Art History, Literature, Religion and Philosophy, Sociology, and Anthropology (most courses focus on Japan).

Course Type

Intensive language and area studies courses at Sophia University Faculty of Liberal Arts.  Since the faculty is made up of international teachers, course structure will vary.

Application Requirements

Prior to receiving an application, all Northwestern students must complete the following steps:
1. Complete the mandatory Study Abroad 101 Quiz on Blackboard.  Call 847-467-6400 or email studyabroad@northwestern.edu (include name and netID) to register for this quiz.
2. After receiving a score of 90% or above, students can puck up the Northwestern University Application for Permission to Study Abroad at the Study Abroad Office.  This application is not available online. 

Northwestern students must complete two applications for this program:
1. CIEE program application, available on the CIEE website.
2. Northwestern University Application for Permission to Study Abroad.
