Description:

This program is designed for students with a desire to understand the complexities and paradoxes of the world's largest democracy. Students have the opportunity to explore India's cultural and religious diversity while experiencing the impact of modernity upon tradition.

University of Hyderabad, over thirty years old, was the first federally funded university in the southern part of India. The University has over 200 faculty and 2,100 full-time students and eight schools: chemistry; life sciences; mathematics and computer and information sciences; physics; humanities; social sciences; management studies; performing arts, fine arts, and communication. The campus is located approximately 30-45 minutes from the downtown area by public transportation affording students a more tranquil environment outside of the city center to learn about student life in Andhra Pradesh.

Language Requirements

No prerequisites, but Northwestern requires students to enroll in a language course as part of the program.

Northwestern Requirements

CIEE requires that all participants enroll in the following courses:
  • One Hindi language course: either Conversational Hindi, Beginning Hindi, or Intermediate Hindi. Students who have previously taken a college-level Hindi course, or speak Hindi with their family members, have the option of taking an independent study in Hindi, or one of the other local languages, Urdu or Telugu.
  • Two courses at the University of Hyderabad: these classes are with local Indian students and ensure that students benefit from the unique cross-cultural opportunity of direct university enrollment.
  • One additional elective: either a Study in India Program (SIP) course, a CIEE course, or another university course.

Academic Specialties

CIEE students primarily take their classes from the arts, social sciences, and humanities departments.

Course Type

  • CIEE courses: open to CIEE program participants only.
  • SIP (Study in India) courses: open to CIEE participants, international students, and Indian students.
  • University courses: direct integration into the University of Hyderabad, open to all students.
  • All non-language courses are taught in English.

Additional Information

  • Students interested in undertaking daily yoga practice may do so at the yoga center located on campus. Opportunities are also available for students to study classical Indian music, critical thinking/meditation, and dance as non-credit courses.
  • Part-time volunteer projects with local NGOs can be arranged for highly motivated students.

Housing

Students choose from three housing options:
  • Home stays: a furnished room in a local family’s home.
  • The Tagore International House: furnished, air conditioned single or double occupancy rooms on the university campus

Program Costs

Fall 2009: $20,115

  • This includes the estimated cost of tuition, room, board, books, transportation, personal expenses and SAAF. The sample costs provided are for the fall term; for other terms and for the most current cost, contact the sponsoring organization.

Application Requirements

Prior to receiving an application, all Northwestern students must complete the following steps:
  1. Complete the mandatory Study Abroad 101 Quiz on Blackboard. Call (847-467-6400) or e-mail studyabroad@northwestern.edu (include your name and netID) to register for this quiz.
  2. After recieving a score of 90% or above, students can pick up the Northwestern University Application for Permission to Study Abroad at the Study Abroad Office. This application it is not available online.

Contact Returnees
