SIT India: National Identity & the Arts

Description:

This program studies the visual and performing arts of India—its architecture, painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, film, dance, music, and drama—in historic and contemporary contexts. Students are challenged to consider the relationship between religion, art, and identity. Intensive Hindi language instruction, interdisciplinary lectures, and an independent research project complete the study of art history as a window through which to view this complex nation.

Language Requirements

None, but students will enroll in an intensive Hindi course as part of the program.

Academic Specialties

Along with an intensive Hindi language course, students will enroll in an interdisciplinary course conducted in English, as well as a course that prepares students for their Independent Study Project. Coursework focuses on the visual and performing arts of India in historic and contemporary contexts, as well as the relationship between religion, art, and identity.

Course Type

Field-based, experiential learning in program courses, with an independent study component.

Additional Information

  • There is frequent, arts-related lecture series as part of the program.
  • Along with the independent study portion, students will also participate in educational excursions outside of Delhi.
  • A short, smaller group workshop excursion is also offered, and students select a topic of study.

Housing

Home stays (4 weeks), hostels, private homes or small hotels during the Independent Study Project (4 weeks).
