Description:

In Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang province and known as the Garden City for the unusual quantity and quality of its parks and greenery, the C.V. Starr-Middlebury School in China program is designed for the specific needs of high intermediate and advanced Chinese language students. The program's primary goal is to increase Chinese language competency in reading, writing, speaking and listening. All courses are conducted entirely in Chinese.

Program Requirements

  • Students must have completed at least two years or the equivalent of college-level Chinese.
  • Students must have a B average in Chinese language and major courses.
  • Students should be enrolled in a Chinese language course the term before they go abroad.

Note: Spring term without the January term is NOT an option for NU students.

Course Type

The curriculum consists of:

  • A required One-on-One Tutorial course designed to help students reach a higher level of language competency through exploration of an in-depth topic of their choice
  • A required Hangzhou Studies course
  • Two electives focused on Chinese culture

Additional Information

  • Qualified Full Year students may direct enroll at Zhejiang University of Technology for one course during the second semester.
  • Credit bearing and non-credit bearing internships are available in a wide variety of fields, depending on availability and student qualifications.

Housing

Double-occupancy rooms in a dormitory with a Chinese university student.  No meals are included but three meals per day are offered in campus cafeterias at a modest price.
