Course Type
- Chinese Language: Interdisciplinary Course
While there is no language prerepquisite to participate in the China summer program, students are required to take intensive language training while in China. Seven levels are offered, depending on the student’s skill level. Courses will be taught by Chinese language instructors from the local university. - Choice of:
- History of Chinese Communism
Students will explore the sources and contours of Chinese communism from its inception to Mao’s death in 1976. They will learn about the origins, development, and consequences of the Chinese Communist movement. As Mao was a central figure in much of the development in the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), students will also learn about Mao’s life and deeds. - Public Health in China
This seminar consists of a series of lectures, in English, by faculty at Capital Medical University in Beijing. Lectures will introduce students to the most common health problems in China, the role of government, the organization of the health care system, and issues such as environmental health, SARS, HIV/AIDS, and emergency preparedness and disaster relief.
- History of Chinese Communism
- Energy and Sustainability in China
In this course, which culminates in a two-week experiential program at Wanxiang Polytechnic College in Hangzhou, students will learn about the unique environmental challenges that exist in China and the new innovations that are being developed to respond to these challenges. The course begins during Spring Quarter at Northwestern with an introduction to the study of environment and sustainability and a visit to the Wanxiang America Corporation headquarters in Elgin, IL. While taking courses at Peking University, students will also receive a few guest lectures from experts in Beijing. Afterwards, while in Hangzhou, students will learn from researchers at Wanxiang Corporation, and will go on various experiential field trips (i.e. solar farms, electric vehicle factory, and energy storage stations). Upon returning to Northwestern University, the students will report on their experience.

Housing
In Beijing: Students will be housed at the Zhong Guan Xin Yuan International Students' Dormitory on the Peking University campus. Students will stay in shared suites, each equipped with 2 or 3 bedrooms, bathroom and living room.
In Hangzhou: Students will be lodged on the Wanxiang Polytechnic College campus in student dorms.
Program Costs

Transportation to Course Site: Students arrange their airline tickets in conjunction with the Office of International Program Development.
Financial Aid: Northwestern students receiving financial aid during the academic year may be eligible for summer aid for this program. Students applying to this program must:
- Download the Northwestern Summer Study Abroad Application.
- Call the IPD office at 847-467-6953 to set up an interview with the IPD study abroad coordinator, and specify which program(s) you are interested in. These interview sessions are intended for students who are ready to apply and are an opportunity to learn more about the program and ask questions. Group interview sessions are held regularly at the IPD office (check IPD's events calendar for the schedule), and you are encouraged to call and reserve a place in a timely manner. Final decisions on acceptance will not be made until after March 1.

- 4 official passport photos
- A copy of your passport. Make sure your passport is valid through February of the following year. If you are planning to apply to this program and you do not yet have a passport (or need to renew your current passport), you should begin this process as soon as possible so that it is completed by the time of application.
