Public Health in China introduces students to major public health issues in China and to traditional Chinese medicine.  The courses are taught by faculty at Capital Medical University, and include site visits to hospitals and clinics.

Program Requirements

All applicants should have approximately a 3.0 GPA.

Course Type

Program courses take place at Tsinghua University and the Capital Medical University.

Courses offered: Students must enroll in all three courses listed below. Please note that there are no direct Northwestern course equivalencies for the below programs. Students must petition for credit upon their return. For more information, please contact the Office of International Program Development at international@northwestern.edu.

Public Health in China: (1 credit)
This seminar consists of a series of lectures, in English, by faculty at the Capital University of Medical Sciences in Beijing. Lectures will introduce students to the most common heath problems in China, the role of government, the organization of the health care system, and issues such as environmental health, addiction, violence, SARS and HIV/AIDS.

Traditional Chinese Medicine: (1 credit)
The School of Chinese Medicine is one of the affiliated institutes of the Capital University of Medicinal Sciences. Students will be able to learn about traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture, and herbal remedies and the role they play in today's China.

Chinese Language: Interdisciplinary Course (2 credits)
While there is no language prerequisite to participate in the China summer program, students are required to take intensive language training while in China. Seven levels are offered, depending upon the student’s skill level. Tutorials in Chinese are offered during spring quarter, prior to departure, for participating students.

Policies:

Planned Excursions: Students travel weekly to important cultural sites and museums, including the Great Wall of China, the Forbidden City, and the Summer Palace. In addition, students take field trips relevant to their course work.

Notes:

  • The China program fills extremely fast. Group interview sessions are held regularly at the IPD office, and you are encouraged to call and reserve a place in a timely manner. Final decisions on acceptance will not be made until after March 3rd.
  • This program gives admission preference to upperclassmen.

Housing

University housing:   
  • Students live in double-occupancy, air-conditioned rooms in an international dormitory. Group lunches with language instructors are provided each weekday.

Program Costs

Summer 2009 program fee: $8,000. Summer 2010 fees TBA.
  • Includes tuition, airfare, housing, lunch, and excursions. Students are responsible for health insurance, other meals, personal expenses, and the Study Abroad Administrative Fee.
  • This price may fluctuate slightly depending on final airline arrangements.  Students will be responsible for any additional charges incurred by flight requests that incur costs above those budgeted by the program. NU provides round-trip airfare from either Chicago or San Francisco to Beijing.

Transportation to Course Site:
Students arrange their airline tickets in conjunction with the Office of International Program Development.

Financial Aid:
Northwestern students receiving financial aid during the academic year may be eligible for summer aid for this program. If funding is available, it may count as one of their 12 quarters of aid. Non-Northwestern students should contact the Financial Aid office at their home institution.

Announcing Summer 2010 Immersion Language Grants (ILG):
Northwestern University's Immersion Experience Program is pleased to announce a new undergraduate initiative to promote the intensive and experiential learning of foreign languages. During the summer of 2010, the Office of the Provost will award 10 Immersion Language Grants ($2,000 each) to help defray the cost of intensive language study completed abroad or in the United States. Students interested in this study abroad program are eligible to apply for the grant:

  • Applicants must write an essay statement describing how intensive language study will advance their overall undergraduate education.
  • The ILG application deadline is January 29, 2010.

Application Requirements

Students applying to the China summer program DO NOT need to take the 101 session on Blackboard, as is required of other study abroad students.

Students applying to the China summer program must:

  1. Complete the Northwestern Summer Study Abroad Application and submit it with the required non-refundable deposit of $1,000 to Vic Flessas in the Office of International Program Development by March 3, 2010.
  2. Interview with the Office of International Program Development as part of the application process.  Group interview sessions are held regularly at the IPD office, and you are encouraged to call and reserve a place in a timely manner.  Final decisions on acceptance will not be made until after March 3rd.
  3. Submit 4 official passport photos with their application.
