How do you develop a world-class economy without causing irreversible environmental harm? China serves as a prime example of the urgency of this question, as the country faces the perils of industrial growth.  This new program addresses China’s environment dilemma and the impact it will have on neighboring countries, world resources, and the health and way of life of the Chinese population.

Language Requirements

Non-language classes and materials are all in English. However, students will be required to attend on-site Chinese language classes. Three to four levels of language are offered, depending on demand. Non-credit tutorials for beginners are provided during the spring before departure.

Program Requirements

All participants in programs sponsored by the Office of International Program Development must purchase health insurance coverage from HTH Worldwide.  Read about HTH costs and enrollment.

Course Type

Classes are composed of a set curriculum.

Mandarin Language Training
There is no language prerequisite, but Chinese will be offered at several levels abroad.  Before departure, beginners will take a non-credit tutorial on survival Chinese.

Chinese Environment and Culture
This course introduces students to the history and culture of Hong Kong, Shanghai, Guangzhou and the Pearl River Delta, and examines the relevance of Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism and other Chinese philosophical traditions to Chinese environmental protection and sustainable development.

Pearl River Delta: A Hands On Experience
This course combines lectures and experiential learning, and introduces students to the environmental complexities of the Pearl River Delta, an environmentally rich and diverse subtropical area with a huge human population, suffering from air and water pollution, public health challenges, and with bizarre jurisdictional arrangements that hamper regional solutions.

Chinese Economic Growth and Environmental Policy
This course examines China's national and local environmental policies on energy, urbanization and pollution. It also explores China's role in the U.N, WTO, ASEAN and other international organizations with regard to environmental issues including climate change, health, food, and biodiversity.

Housing

Guest houses and dormitories at the University of Hong Kong and Tongji University.

Program Costs

Estimated program costs will be announced in late winter.  They will be at or below the price of tuition for one quarter.  This includes estimated tuition, housing, excursions and airline travel.  It does not include the Study Abroad Administration Fee, health insurance, meals or personal expenses.

Application Requirements

Prior to receiving an application, all Northwestern students must complete the following steps:
  1. Complete the mandatory Study Abroad 101 Quiz on Blackboard. E-mail studyabroad@northwestern.edu (include your name and NetID) to register for this quiz.
  2. After receiving a score of 90% or above, students can pick up the Northwestern University Application for Permission to Study Abroad at the Study Abroad Office. This application it is not available online.
Northwestern students must complete two applications for this program:
  1. An IPD program application. Call International Program Development at 847-467-7834 or e-mail international@northwestern.edu to first set up a personal interview - as this is required as the first step towards application.
  2. The Northwestern University Application for Permission to Study Abroad.
