China: Environment and Development
Language Requirements
Non-language classes and materials are all in English. However, students will be required to attend on-site Chinese language classes. Three to four levels of language are offered, depending on demand. Non-credit tutorials for beginners are provided during the spring before departure.Program Requirements

Classes are composed of a set curriculum.
Chinese Language
There is no language prerequisite, but Chinese will be offered at several levels abroad. Before departure, beginners will take a non-credit tutorial on survival Chinese.
Environment and Culture
This course introduces students to the history and culture of Hong Kong, Shanghai, Guangzhou and the Pearl River Delta, and examines the relevance of Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism and other Chinese philosophical traditions to Chinese environmental protection and sustainable development.
The Politics and Science of China’s Water
This course combines lectures and experiential learning, and introduces students to the environmental complexities of the Pearl River Delta, an environmentally rich and diverse subtropical area with a huge human population, suffering from air and water pollution, public health challenges, and with bizarre jurisdictional arrangements that hamper regional solutions.
Economic Growth, Energy and Environmental Policy
This course examines China's national and local environmental policies on energy, urbanization and pollution. It also explores China's role in the U.N, WTO, ASEAN and other international organizations with regard to environmental issues including climate change, health, food, and biodiversity.

Estimated program costs will be announced in late winter. They will be at or below the price of tuition for one quarter. This includes estimated tuition, housing, excursions and airline travel. It does not include the Study Abroad Administration Fee, health insurance, meals or personal expenses.Application Requirements
Prior to receiving an application, all Northwestern students must complete the following steps:- Complete the mandatory Study Abroad 101 Quiz on Blackboard. E-mail studyabroad@northwestern.edu (include your name and NetID) to register for this quiz.
- After receiving a score of 90% or above, students can pick up the Northwestern University Application for Permission to Study Abroad at the Study Abroad Office. This application it is not available online.
- An IPD program application. Call International Program Development at 847-467-7834 or e-mail international@northwestern.edu to first set up a personal interview - as this is required as the first step towards application.
