Description:

The IFSA-Butler program in Lima, Peru facilitates direct enrollment in classes with local students at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP), one of the highest ranked universities in Latin America. In addition, the program offers two mandatory courses designed specifically for IFSA participants, as well as a required service-learning component through community service and research with major NGOs in Lima. Interested students have the opportunity to enroll in the Social Constructions of Gender and Community Based Organizations concentration. IFSA provides a full range of student support services including pre-departure and on-site advising and orientation, housing coordination, and field trips.

Language Requirements

  • Required: 2.5 years of college level Spanish (7 quarters, including completion of Spanish 199-0), or equivalent
  • Recommended: completion of one 200-level class

Academic Specialties

All students are required to take two program classes designed specifically for IFSA-Butler participants, taught in Spanish by local professors:
  • Advanced Academic Writing and Peruvian Culture
  • Peruvian Social Reality

In addition, students enroll directly in courses at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú with local students. Top departments are Anthropology, Archeology, Business, Education, Engineering, Fine Arts, Journalism, Natural Sciences, and Political Science.

All students will work closely with a local non-governmental organization throughout the duration of the semester as a part of the Peruvian Social Reality program course. Students also complete a community research project based on the experience at the end of the semester.

Course Type

  • Two required courses, designed specifically for IFSA-Butler students:  Advanced Academic Writing and Peruvian Culture and Peruvian Social Reality.
  • Direct enrollment in courses at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú.
  • Work with a local NGO throughout the duration of the semester as part of the Peruvian Social Reality program course.

Additional Information

Archaeology majors can work at Huaca Pucllana, a pre-Incan site from the Lima culture that dates from 0 to 700 AD and is still under exploration.
