Students on this program enroll in courses at the Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán, which allows for a wider range of course options and a true immersion experience. The Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán (UADY) is a large university with 15,500 undergraduate and graduate students. With fifteen facultades, a research institute, and nineteen libraries, UADY offers a challenging academic environment and extensive resources. IFSA-Butler students may choose classes from a variety of faculties, although most concentrate their studies in the Facultad de Antropologia, which offers courses in history, literature and linguistics, anthropology, and social anthropology.

Language Requirements

Required: 2 years of college-level Spanish, or equivalent
Recommended: at least one recent quarter of Spanish

Additional Enrichment Opportunities:
  • Students will have the opportunity to volunteer with organizations such as the Red Cross, Museum of Anthropological Art, local radio stations, human rights organizations, among others.
  • In addition to the formal Spanish class, the program organizes academic tutorials that are designed to support students throughout the semester or year.
Planned Excursions: Excursions during the semester to archaeological sites, biological reserves, Uxmal, Ek-Balam, and other areas.
