Students are enrolled directly into the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (PUC), one of the top universities in the Spanish-speaking world.  Home to almost 20,000 undergraduate students, PUC has four campuses in Santiago containing 18 different schools, including Biological Sciences, Economics, Chemistry, Communications, Education, Engineering, Mathematics and Social Sciences.  Course are taught in Spanish.

Language Requirements

  • Required: 2 years+ or equivalent of college Spanish and the ability to do coursework in Spanish.
  • If you think you might declare a major or minor in Spanish or Portuguese, either before studying abroad or once you return, meet with a study abroad adviser in the Department before you leave. To arrange an appointment, contact the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at 847-491-8249.

This exchange program focuses on students in science and engineering; however, PUC is a comprehensive university with a wide range of course options.

Additional Information

The university has 18 total faculties (schools) and is an important national center of research in social science, natural science, health, economics, engineering, agriculture, philosophy, theology, arts and letters. Research is encouraged.

PUC has four campuses:
  • San Joaquín, which includes the schools of Engineering (civil, industrial, mechanical, electrical, computational, and biotechnology) and Chemistry.
  • Casa Central, which houses the Medical, Law and Communication schools.
  • Oriente, which houses the arts.
  • Lo Contador where the schools of Architecture, Urban studies and Design are located.

Exchange Program Cost Information

  • Students abroad for one quarter (fall) will pay Northwestern tuition for one quarter.
  • Students abroad for two quarters (fall/winter; winter/spring) will pay Northwestern tuition equivalent to a semester (1.5 quarters).
  • Students attending Northwestern exchange programs are not assessed the Study Abroad Administrative Fee.

Application Requirements

Northwestern students must complete two applications and two interviews:
  1. Northwestern University Application for Permission to Study Abroad, the IPD application and the PUC application.
  2. A personal interview with the Office of International Program Development, which administers this program. Call 847-467-7834 to schedule an interview.
  3. A meeting with a Spanish language professor to assess language skills.
