Description:

The Chilean Universities Program gives students the unique opportunity to study at three universities in Santiago. With all the privileges of a degree-seeking student, participation in activities with the local student population allows for greater immersion, academically and culturally.

Language Requirements

  • Required: 2.5 years of college level Spanish (7 quarters, including Spanish 199-0), or the equivalent
  • Recommended: completion of one 200-level course

Northwestern Requirements

  • If you think you might declare a major or minor in the Spanish or Portuguese, either before studying abroad or once you return, meet with a study abroad adviser in the Department before you leave. To arrange an appointment, please call 847-491-8249.

Academic Specialties

Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile: Engineering, political sciences, agricultural science, theology, arts, literature, history and aesthetics are the most popular subject areas studied by former IFSA-Butler students here.

Universidad de Chile: This university offers numerous course options in all academic areas.

Universidad Diego Portales: Sociology, psychology, literature, design, education, political science and law are some of the outstanding areas of study at UDP.

Course Type

  • Direct enrollment, facilitated by IFSA-Butler, in courses at one or all of the above Universities.
  • One mandatory course: Advanced Spanish Grammar, Composition, and Conversation, a course designed especially for IFSA-Butler students.
  • Optional: a second IFSA program course and/or a directed research project.

Additional Information

Volunteer opportunities with various organizations, arranged with the help of the IFSA-Butler staff in Santiago, are available for interested students.
