Description:

The SIT program model allows students to not only take program courses, but to plan and execute an independent study project while abroad. In the classroom and on excursions, students discover how cultural processes, identities, and resources determine who controls and benefits from development in Bolivia.

Language Requirements

Required: 1.5 years (or equivalent) of recent college Spanish and the ability to follow coursework in Spanish, as assessed by SIT.

Northwestern Requirements

  • Spanish Major or Minor: If you have declared a major or minor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, or are considering doing so, discuss your study abroad plan with a departmental adviser. To schedule an appointment, please call 847-491-8249.

Academic Specialties

  • Intensive Spanish language study.
  • Program courses that generally include the following topics: historical foundations of social change, Andean and Amazonian cultures and cosmovision, economy and development, the politics of contemporary issues, development practices, land, environment, development, and indigenous movements.
  • Independent Study Project, during which students pursue original research on a selected subject requiring deep investigation and analysis, which results in an extended research paper. Students also have the option of producing a documentary film or writing and illustrating a children’s book on their selected topic.

Course Type

Field-based, experiential learning in program courses, with an independent study component.

Additional Information

  • Along with the 4-week independent study period, students will spend 1 week with an indigenous family and participate in several educational excursions.
