Description:

The Argentine Universities Program allows students a wide variety of courses to choose from, allowing them to select classes from four of the top universities in Buenos Aires. By designing a unique study program based on the student's individual academic interest, the AUP allows for both academic and cultural immersion. In addition to the University course offerings, students can elect to concentrate in a certain discipline, conduct research, and/or enroll in IFSA program courses for study abroad students.

Language Requirements

Required: 2.5 years of college level Spanish (7 quarters, including Spanish 199-0), or equivalent
Recommended: completion of one 200-level class

Northwestern Requirements

  • Spanish Major or Minor: If you have declared a major or minor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, or are considering doing so, discuss your study abroad plan with a departmental adviser. To schedule an appointment, please call 847-491-8249.

Program Requirements

All students, regardless of concentration, take the Advanced Spanish and Argentine Culture course designed exclusively for IFSA-Butler students.

Academic Specialties

Students take courses in one or all of these universities:

Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA): One of the oldest public universities in Argentina, UBA offers courses across all disciplines.

Universidad Católica Argentina (UCA): A small, traditional, private university that specializes in humanities, politics, communications, business and economics.

Universidad del Salvador (USAL): A medium-sized, urban, private university that specializes in social sciences, medicine, and communications (advertising/journalism). Study abroad students tend to take courses in social sciences, philosophy, history, and letters. The university also offers a number of interesting courses in the fine arts.

Universidad Torcuato di Tella (UTDT): A very small, private university that focuses on the social sciences, with courses in business, economics, government/political science, history, international relations, and law.

Students can elect to specialize in one of the following concentrations:

  • Directed Research
  • Cinema
  • Literature
  • Theater
  • Diversity, Minority and Gender Studies
  • Human Rights

IFSA Program Courses include:

  • State and Society in Contemporary Argentina
  • Argentine Foreign Policy
  • Latin American and Argentine Literature

Course Type

  • All students take Advanced Spanish and Argentine Culture, designed exclusively for IFSA-Butler participants.
  • The remaining courses are selected from those offered through the IFSA program and their partner universities.
  • Students who enroll in a concentration will participate in fieldwork through specialized assignments.

Other Opportunities:
  • Volunteer opportunities are available with various organizations, arranged with the help of the IFSA-Butler staff in Argentina.
  • Students have all the privileges of a degree-seeking student at their host university, including access to university sporting and social clubs.
