Description:

The Argentine Universities Program allows students a wide variety of courses to choose from, allowing them to select classes from four of the top universities in Buenos Aires. By designing a unique study program based on the student's individual academic interest, the AUP allows for both academic and cultural immersion. In addition to the University course offerings, students can elect to concentrate in a certain discipline, conduct research, and/or enroll in IFSA program courses for study abroad students.

Language Requirements

Required: 2.5 years of college level Spanish (7 quarters, including Spanish 199-0), or equivalent
Recommended: completion of one 200-level class

IFSA also offers a Buenos Aires Intermediate program that might be an option for students who do not meet the above language requirement. For more information, please contact Michelle Gere, Study Abroad Adviser.

Cinema Studies Concentration only: 3 years of college level Spanish, or equivalent

Northwestern Requirements

  • If you think you might declare a major or minor in Spanish and Portuguese, either before studying abroad or once you return, meet with an academic adviser in the Department before you leave. To arrange an appointment, please call 847-491-8249.

Program Requirements

  • All students, regardless of concentration, take the Advanced Spanish and Argentine Culture course designed exclusively for IFSA-Butler students.
  • The specialized Cinema Studies concentration is limited to students who have 3 years of university-level Spanish and are pursuing a major or minor in visual arts or a related field.

Academic Specialties

Students may take courses in one or all of these universities:

Universidad de Buenos Aires: A large, world renowned, public university that specializes in drama, philosophy and social sciences. Particularly known for its human rights courses, including its Nobel Prize-winning faculty members.

Universidad Católica Argentina: A small, traditional, private university that specializes in humanities, politics, communications, business and economics.

Universidad del Salvador: A medium-sized, urban, private university that specializes in social sciences, medicine, and communications (advertising/journalism). Study abroad students tend to take courses in social sciences, philosophy, history, and letters. The university also offers a number of interesting courses in the fine arts.

Universidad Torcuato di Tella: A very small, private university that focuses on the social sciences, including political science and international studies.

Students can elect to specialize in one of the following concentrations:

  • Directed Research
  • Gender, Diversity, and Minority Studies
  • Human Rights
  • Literature
  • Theater
  • Cinema Studies

Course Type

  • One mandatory Advanced Spanish and Argentine Culture course designed especially for IFSA-Butler students.
  • All other courses are a combination of electives taken at partner Argentine universities, and/or program courses for IFSA students only.

Additional Information

  • Volunteer opportunities are available with various organizations, arranged with the help of the IFSA-Butler staff in Argentina.
  • Students have all the privileges of a degree-seeking student at their host university, including access to university sporting and social clubs.

Fall 2009: $21,630

  • This includes estimated tuition, room, board, books, transportation, personal expenses and SAAF. The sample costs provided are for the fall term program; for other terms and for the most current cost, contact the sponsoring organization.

Application Requirements

Prior to receiving an application, all Northwestern students must complete the following steps:

  1. Complete the mandatory Study Abroad 101 Quiz on Blackboard. Call 847-467-6400 or e-mail studyabroad@northwestern.edu (include your name and netID) to register for this quiz.
  2. After receiving a score of 90% or above, students can pick up the Northwestern University Application for Permission to Study Abroad at the Study Abroad Office. This application it is not available online.

Northwestern students must complete two applications for this program:

  1. IFSA-Butler program application, available on the IFSA-Butler web site.
  2. Northwestern University Application for Permission to Study Abroad

Note: Students who are accepted to the program should start their visa process as early as possible because obtaining an Argentine visa can take a long time.
