IES Study Abroad in Argentina
Language Requirements
- Beginning & Intermediate Spanish Program: 1 year of college level Spanish, or equivalent (This is a Northwestern requirement, even though IES does not require a year of the language.)
- Advanced Spanish Program: 2 or more years of college level Spanish, or equivalent
- Advanced Spanish Honors Program: 3 or more years of college level Spanish, or equivalent, a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2, and an additional application to the Universidad Torcuato Di Tella
Northwestern Requirements
- Recommended for Spanish majors/minors: If you think you might declare a major or minor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, either before studying abroad or once you return, meet with a an academic adviser in the Department before you leave. - Students interested in the internship placement on this program need to read about the policy for transferring internship credit and complete the Northwestern University Petition for Obtaining Credit for an Internship.
Academic Specialties
IES Specialties: Area Studies courses in anthropology, art, education, environmental studies, film studies, history, international business, international relations, Latin American studies, literature, political science, public health, sociology, and theater.
Partner University Specialties:
- Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA): One of the oldest public universities in Argentina, UBA offers courses in anthropology, architecture, art history, design, geography, history, law, literature, and philosophy.
- Instituto Universitario Nacional de Arte (IUNA): Best known for its courses in dance and music, students of any Spanish language level can enroll in courses at IUNA, which include courses in dance (ballet, jazz, tango, modern dance, folkloric, history and theory of dance, and classical) and music (classical, contemporary, digital music, folkloric, choir, orchestra, and music history and theory).
- Universidad del Museo Social Argentino (UMSA): A private university that offers courses across many diciplines, including drawing, painting and sculpture.
- Universidad Ciencias Empresariales y Sociales (UCES): A private university offering courses in business, international relations, economics and marketing.
- Universidad Torcuato di Tella (UTDT): Only students enrolled in the Advanced Spanish Honors Program can enroll in courses at UTDT. Courses offered are in business, economics, government/political science, history, international relations, and law.

- Advanced Spanish Program: IES language and Area Studies courses, university courses at UBA, IUNA, UMSA and UCES, internship and service learning opportunities.
- Advanced Spanish Honors Program: IES language and Area Studies courses, university courses at UTDT, UBA, UMSA and UCES, internship and service learning opportunities.

- Students benefit from the many extracurricular activities facilitated by IES, such as course-related excursions to museums, attendance at cultural events and attractions, and university activities.

Prior to receiving an application, all Northwestern students must complete the following steps:
- Complete the mandatory Study Abroad 101 Quiz on Blackboard. Call 847-467-6400 or e-mail studyabroad@northwestern.edu (include your name and netID) to register for this quiz.
- After receiving a score of 90% or above, students can pick up the Northwestern University Application for Permission to Study Abroad at the Study Abroad Office. This application it is not available online.
Northwestern students must complete two applications for this program:
- IES program application, available on the IES Web Site.
- Northwestern University Application for Permission to Study Abroad.
Note: Students who are accepted to the program should start their visa process as early as possible because obtaining an Argentine visa can take a long time.
