Public Health in South Africa

» General Information

Location:

Stellenbosch, South Africa

Description:

This unique program introduces students to public health issues in contemporary South Africa, with particular focus on the impacts of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the country. Public health coursework will cover the most pressing domestic healthcare issues, public health infrastructure in South Africa, and the challenges of delivering healthcare in light of widespread poverty in the post-apartheid era. The HIV studies component is a series of organized topical seminars with Stellenbosch faculty from the Africa Centre for HIV/AIDS Management. A political science course complements the public health curriculum, providing important historical and political context. In addition, students will learn Xhosa, one of South Africa’s twelve national languages, spoken prominently in the Western Cape (all courses are taught in English, of course).  Organized excursions take students to public and private hospitals and clinics, grassroots organizations, and private agencies in Stellenbosch and Cape Town, as well as to historical sites of note around the Cape region. Students will also spend a week at Kruger National Park and conduct research projects on health and development.
